Do Social Networking Sites affect academic performance?

Many students claim that Social Networking Sites are a huge distraction from education process and a waste of time, however there are other people, who argue that Social Networking Sites usage helps them succeed in class and has a positive influence on their academic performance as well as social development. Do you consider Social Networking Sites a good communication tool that helps you manage your studies or is it an addicting distraction from education process? what do you use Social Networking Sites for?

Social Networking Sites are a great communication tool that helps us stay in touch, discuss assignments and projects, receive announcements and organize events. It helps us manage our time and work, therefore it has a positive effect on our academic performance.

It helps us manage our time and work

In what universe does it pay off, education-wise, to spend more time chattering away with friends than actually studying for a test or working on an assignment?

Another reason why social networking is not beneficial: exercise helps the mind. If the students are indoors using their computers or laptops to social network, they are neither studying nor exercising: the two things that may help academic performance.

By saying that it helps "managing our time and work", I meant you can become more efficient by completing tasks faster and easier using Social Networking Sites. Yes, I do believe that Social Networking Sites help us save our time and here is the reason why:

If you have your group mates as your friends online, you don't have to drive up to the other end of the city to work on a project together. All you do is you go online and discuss it there. A conference is also a brilliant option for assignments that involve more than two people. This indeed saves a huge amount of time that could be wasted on the road. And faster you complete the task, more time you can have for your exercising and reading and many other things. Does is make any sense?

I believe that social networking sites have their place in work, play, study and war! The question is, does the individual know how to use the social networking tool to their advantage in each of these situations? I suspect the answer is no!

I totally agree, social networking sites are great! However what most students lack are appropriate way of using them and time management.

Yah but there needs to be a time where you need to something besides being in a screen all day. And also like I do I give my eyes a rest after I am on it for hours

There must be a line drawn between what is distracting and purposeful tool, and of course, there is much interpretation, so it really must be decided by the individual, otherwise, unless, one is on an SNS website constantly for 24 hours, it is not a problem.

Social Networking Sites certainly may distract from studying, but ,in my opinion, they are not the distractors. If there were no such web-sites, people would find other ways to waste their time to avoid studying. On the other hand, such web-sites are great tools for communications. Imagine a son or a a friend who are far away abroad for whom phone-communications are too expensive. The only way he or she can to the family are such web-sites. For them network web-sites are a piece of their happiness when they can talk to their loved ones.

Barbie 2023 Outfits Costume has absolutely astonished me! It's interesting how they combine elements of vintage Barbie with current fashion trends. As a lifelong admirer of Barbie, these costumes are like a dream come true for me.

Recent years have seen a strong resurgence of the jack harlow white suit fashion, which Jack Harlow wears with ease. He makes a strong statement with this outfit, whether he's walking the red carpet or giving a performance.

The sort of students that get distracted by SNS's are the sort of students that can get distracted from anything. There was an article I read on facebook (ironic) about it recently, based on an Ivy League college, which had statistical evidence of this (source lost).

Also, from experience, knowing people that have deactivated their facebook accounts for exams and such, it doesn't help. It's there if you want it, but if you don't, you don't use it.

Social networking sites can be extremely useful in education. Several schools and universities even use this site for learning purposes...

Some use it to teach english as a second language, current events, creating good debates, forming good arguments...and plenty of other uses.

I don't see how they're a distraction. Games and whatnot maybe. But the only reason they'd be a distraction is the person using it. Facebook in my opinion is good for keeping in contact with people and it's extremely useful for events. Twitter you can read about peoples' days etc. But they can't certainly use up all the time of a student unless they can't manage their time well enough.

Anything can be a distraction if the person doesn't set his/her priorities straight.

Are you smoking it is too is a distracter. I walked into my college cafeteria and some girl was crying and distrote over some stupid facebook issue with her boyrfriend instead of worrying over the class she was about to attend. Yeah its the persons choice wether they are going to be discplined enough to manage their time correctly, but yes it is distracting and so is this website. From the life experience I have held with this network being out for all these years it has been a super distracter from education. I also walk in my colleges computer lab in the library and I see literarly half the students on facebook and you fricken tube. Americas going to being on Facebook while the global economy passes us by and other countries get better and stronger!

No more a distraction than you let them be. As with most things, the way you use it will determine costs or benefits. Books can help your studies if you read your textbooks to aid understanding, and hinder them if you only ever read books about supernaturals and the like. You can drive a car safely to school each morning, or drink drive and crash. The list goes on.

Similarly, you can let Facebook take over your life, or use it only for quick communication with friends. In my opinion, it's not a matter of the distraction of SNS but moderation. And we lack it.

I think that Social Network play own role in student life! From my experience, I see that it is very harmful for my education, because I spend a lot of time with Facebook that is why I spend less time with my home works. I think that if i will break my habit I will have better academic performance.

Social network takes too much time which can be spent on studying. Some students go there just to check what is going on, and end up spending all time sitting in social network sites and most of the time this results in addiction.

Yes Socail network does affect adcademic performance because if the person is addicted to it and keeps going on it every single day and they dont want to study or do there homework then they have poor grades. Unless they do there homework first and then after they do there homework they can go on there socail networking sites.

Try the Unplugged Challenge where you can't use your phones,go on the computer,go on facebook, online gaming or ipods for a week. I surivived it because I dont really have a ipod or a facebook but I do have a ps3 with online.

In my point of view, I want to say that these social network sites affect perfomance, because people spend lots of time on these sites and almost forget about the time. Nowadays social networks became very popular and lots of people, especially students and pupils spend their free time on these sites. While chating with friends, watching videos people forget about everything and education is not the exception. Students should spend less time on these sites and should study. In addition, now people loose the process of real communication by sitting on these social network sites. We should spend more time with real people.

FACEBOOK is RETARDED!!!! The best thing you can say is that if you have family and love ones that are far away then it possibly is a good easy way to connect. But thats why you have email accounts that have attachments for pics and much more. Facebook is not only a distracter from EDUCATION its a COMPETITION race/ drama starter/ I have a million FAKE FRIENDS/ Addictive/ I have no time so smell the roses or shit stink at all place. Seriously I hope Facebooks goes out of business and people lose intrests. Seriously, it reminds of that movie with Bruce Willis where all the people are fake and live at home connected to a machine that puts them in society as an image "Whats that movie called" FACEBOOK SUCKS and the person who stole the idea and got credit for it ZUCKER SUCKER bERG sucks even more. HOW's that for free speech. People go enjoy the SUN and some nature and stop Obsessing over a fack imaged life. Sorry about my poor spelling Oh I FOCUS ON YOUR SCHOOL IT WILL PAY OFF praying the economy gets better

SNS sites will distract many students away from their Studies. It would be nice if those Social Networking Sites would only be used on weekends, but this is not the case with the overwhelming majority of students.
