Dubai vs New york
In 2011 I'll graduate and my parents will give me as a present a trip to a destination I can choose. Well I love skyscrapers (duh...) but what city should I choose? My first intention was to go to Dubai, because I love the city (read my signature), but than I got uncertain about it. It has some less nice things about it. Number 1 is that it's very hot, so we have to go in a vacation not in the summer. So it will be a short trip like 3 to 10 days, because those vacations in my country only last that long (except summer vacation). It's also still under construction and not very dense, it just started and has no history yet. I heard about alot of pollution that you can't even swim in the sea because it's to dirty. It also is in the desert with almost no green. So that are some negative things. Than I thought about New York, of course together with Chicago the mothercity of skyscrapers. It has alot of history and alot of buildings. But not the highest in the world (little -), however it has very nice tourist attractions like ESB, Statue of Liberty and of course the Skyscraper Museum . You can also go to Central Park, or go out of the city for a day, to just see the rest of America (which I've never been too). In Dubai you would only see sand if you go out of the city. And the biggest positive thing is that it isn't as hot as in Dubai, so we can go in the summer vacation, which means it will be longer. Maybe a month! Dubai however also has some positive things: it has alot of very high skyscrapers ( I believe even more supertalls than NY), it's also amazing that they have build all of it in just about a decade. They also have some very nice stuff to visit like Burj Al Arab, Burj Dubai, all the malls, a indoor-ski-center, palm islands. So I'm really doubting and don't know what to choose anymore.

I was wondering which city is best to go to just for vacation, so not to live or anything. I couldn't find any threads about it in this section but well it has 81 pages of threads, so I didn't read through them all. Sorry if something like this already exists. Of course everyone has his own opinion so I opened a poll, and please give some arguments for it, and don't give stupid reactions like everybody hates Dubai or New York is the ugliest city in the world, stuff like that is just not true, so give a argumented opinion please. Hopefully this thread and poll will give me alot of ideas and will help make my final decision. And of course it's also usefull to other people who want to visit one of these places. Side: Dubai

Dubai achieved in 10 years what New York did in 150 years while the emirate has become a safer place than London and other key western capitals, a US news website has reported. Huffington Post, one of the most popular online news services in the West, described Dubai’s preparations to win the hosting of the 2020 Expo as “mind-blowing” and said it could be the most culturally diverse event. “When I first heard about Dubai it was from someone who had never been. They were quick to judge it as a fake materialistic city built on nothing, full of dropout expats....when I first visited Dubai nothing was further from the truth. It is the most delicious cocktail of ancient and modernity, filled with every creed and colour, situated in the belly button of the world. To me the reverse was true. It was a stand out city, that exuded vitality and hope, a far cry from the crisis infused gloom hanging over the West,” the website said, quoting its reporter BritChick Paris, a British woman residing in Paris. Dubai...you can walk around without getting mugged or shot, it's much hotter and it's only around 6 hours from the UK. Robert C is wrong...Dubai IS the city, the country is the United Arab Emirates . True, Dubai isn't its capital (Abu Dhabi is) but neither is NY the capital of the USA. Side: New york

ith such diversity, history, culture, identity, etc... New York is tha place dudes !!! Dubai and the UAE (whatever history tells us) is still a young place and the problem is (my personal opinion only - I speak with my free mind) - it's losing it's identity really fast!!! Stay in Dubai in amonth and I can bet - you will be having a hard time to thinking what to do or to visit - that you haven't visited or done before. Because it's young, flashy, in a hurry - everything comes almost overnight compared what NY has done..... ummmm..in a half-century !!! Just imagine the history of a building that was built in NY for almost 5 years and the ins and outs during the 15 years of that same building (awesome)!!! Now imagine almost a similar building built within a year (yes-within a year) and it's history for the last 5 years (5 years only because it has to be wrecked down due to zoning or new roads, or something great is to be erected)... And how about the famous New Your City Library .. awesome !!! The location, the building, the amount of volumes and history within... And Dubai Library ? I bet few people know about it existence.. and most probably, they dont even know there is one or if they knew... where? Side: New york

Not even a comparison NY is ten times the city of Dubai cultural, density, wealth every thing about ny overshadows Dubai they might have some nice buildings but there skyline is crap. And i hate how people think Dubai has a better skyline than NY and Chicago just cause dubai has the burj. And dubai was a small wasteland like 15 years ago so i dont think it has culture either when like most the people arent even native born to the area that occupai the city. Think about it beyond the mere superficial. People are attracted to New York because of many other reasons. Dubai has little to offer culturally. Unlike how Dubai is often described on forums like this one it's essentially Arab with very significant Iranian investments and Persian influence. Long-term, I think Dubai is only special to people from poorer third world countries. It's not as special to someone from Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. I seriously doubt Dubai is sustainable. Read more: http://www.city-data.com/forum/asia/ Side: New york
