Improper Use of the term Libertarian

Well, I used to be a Libertarian back in the day, probably around when i very first joined.  As i did more thinking though, I quickly realized that I wasn't a true libertarian.

Here's why:

I'm for the death penalty in some situations

I think the government needs to tax the rich more in order to pay for shit.  That's where all the money's at.  How the money is spent i'm varied, but on government spending i am the opposite of Libertarian.

I believe we do need to get into other's disputes in order to make sure that the collateral damage doesn't reach America.

I believe in the FBI, CIA, Homeland Security and a smaller version of the Department of Education.

But here's the problem folks.  There are so many people out there who call themselves Libertarians just because they think it sounds cool.

Geraldo Rivera: He believes in illegal immigration amnesty.  He, in fact, wants people to ignore the illegal immigration problem and even wants us to help them.

Bill Maher: Biggest joke when it comes to the improper use of Libertarian.

1. He believes in strict gun regulation

2. He supports Obama and the Democrats on their major spending.

3. He supports the closing down of Gitmo (this can be debatable.  Libertarians would normally support coerce interrogation in order to protect Americans because they believe in the "America first" policy.  well, isolationism as an extreme.)

4. He's against America First beliefs.

And there are plenty of people who are like this.  Is Libertarianism just a new fad?  Everyone wants to be seen as a libertarian but they also don't want to support the views.

Well...the thing about libertarians is that conservatives are okay with them because they're economically conservative, and liberals like them because they don't want the government to be involved in social issues....so if you claim to be libertarian, liberals are okay with you, conservatives are okay with you, and you sound intelligent by just using such a big, important sounding word. x]

I honestly don't know what the term "libertarian" encompasses, but I'm devoted to Bill Maher. Don't talk smack about my boy. His "New Rules" are sitting on my shelf, right next to Stephen Colbert's "I Am America (And So Can You!)".

Yeah I have definitely noticed a sort of fad.

Maybe the names conservative and liberal are getting worn out and they want to move to something new.

I will stay a conservative though because I care more about policy and less about the hip new cool image, whatever it may be.

Sounds like some sort of name regarding a type of diet. Like "hey I'm a libertarian, it means I only eat liberals." (;

Isn't the definition of a libertarian someone who falls between liberalism and conservatism, rather than leaning so far into one or the other? So, what if we went on a personal observation and discovered I'm heavy on liberalism, but I agree with a handful of things that are conservative, then what am I suppose to be? A dishonest liberal? Or am I suppose to agree with everything of the party I choose no matter what I personally think of it? Or am I suppose to be affiliated with no party? Or maybe Libertarian party is a piece of crap and everyone is more or less, an Independent?

no, libertarian does not fall between liberal and conservative...

Libertarians basically are the step closer to anarchists.

There be some improper use, but I think you are confused as well. Libertarian can mean different things. There is scale of how much influence you think the government should have. It goes from authoritarian to libertarian. It is easy to describe people based on their position on this scale for economic and social policies as they tend to be rather uniform. You can be socially libertarian and economically authoritarian (Democratic Party), socially authoritarian and economically libertarian (Republican Party), socially and economically authoritarian (Communist Party), or socially and economically libertarian (Libertarian party). You can say you are libertarian with respect to something and you are correct. You can also say you are a supporter of the Libertarian party. I think the reason people like to say they are libertarian is that both mainstream parties in some way agree with the Libertarian party, so they can get more people to agree with them. Democrats agree with stronger social freedom, and Republicans agree with stronger economic freedom.

A Libertarian is someone who believes the only legitimate use of force is for the defense of life, liberty and property. If the politicians we elect are supposed to represent us, how can they decide that force may be used for any other purpose? But they do! Every law they pass involves a penalty which the government may forcibly impose on you.

If you want to know if you (or anyone you know reasonably well) is a libertarian, take the World's Smallest Political Quiz at Advocates for Self-Government.

He's a joke because you disagree with his religious and political views right?
