Should the President have the power to disconnect the internet in times of war?

Lieberman said the Internet was “constantly being probed by other countries for weaknesses and that “we need the capacity for the president to say to an Internet service provider, ‘We’ve got to disconnect the American Internet from all traffic coming in from this country.’”

He cited China, which has long been criticized for its Internet censorship, as an example. “Right now, China can disconnect parts of its Internet in times of war. We need to be able to do that too.”

Apart from the government controlling the internet with exorbitant amount of power, what need is allowing the President to seize all internet activity a benefit to America rather than perceived threat of national security.

Well, there is none.

Side: NO, Way to much power

I think so. The Internet can be hacked and enemies to the United States could do horrible things to the Internet.

Side: YES, Government is GOOD

No! It is completely unecessary. We are just asking for more corruption of power.

Side: NO, Way to much power

I completely disagree with Lieberman on this issue. If we are looking to China in order to determine limitations on Executive power then I think something is clearly wrong.

Side: NO, Way to much power

When does the Executive Power expansion end? Congress contemplates why the executive branch is so powerful.

Well, they keep delegating it.

Side: NO, Way to much power

Well ideally that is why we have the court system, in order to hopefully check these powers when they exceed constitutional limits.

No.

Cutting off American's ability to communicate on the internet will not help America win a war, it's only possible value would be it's ability to influence public opinion by limiting the information Americans have access to.

So, no. Hell no.

The government seems to ALWAYS want to find ways to become more powerful.

But I know why government hates the Internet. The internet is what freedom fighters (currently in America) want... but IRL. The government, especially the Executive Branch, hates the Internet. It represents an untaxed, unregulated market and uncensored information. It even teaches you all the ways to get high legally. It's basically the Libertarian Party's wet dream.

Side: NO, Way to much power

The President should never have the arbitrary power to shut down the interest in any time of war.
