Will there ever be world peace?

Do you think we will ever achieve world peace?

Yes

Yes, but I am assuming all human life will be extinct for this to occur. Here is actually the real issue. Most organisms "consume" to live. We humans consume for so many other reasons. If we could stop being "consumers" except to live, we would all have the same goal. If we all have the same goal we would work together to a common end. The problem comes in when we own property (i.e. land) we believe we own the resources on that land (think ranchers out west who would cut off water supply to another ranch). If we believe we own the resources, we differentiate ourselves and this starts the "battle". Once the battle starts, it can't be stopped until everyone is dead...or at least all but one. Then the war will stop.

Ya... I'm a moral and existential nihilist but I still read about the other types of nihilism. :)

It will not be a lasting peace, but one where freedoms are given up to one organization to govern the world, and blood will be shed to keep that power past the 'elected' term. There will be peace, for a time.

But then things will be even worse than they are now.

Yes, I think so. The trend nowadays is for nations to group together to enable them to do business and defend each other. If this trend continues then we'll see these federations getting bigger and bigger. Eventually we may only have one or two large blocs, which gives less opportunity for petty squabbles. These large blocs are more concerned with trading between themselves than fighting.

Also, the world is becoming more integrated at an individual level. A person from Russia can chat on the internet with a person from the USA, something that would have been impossible several decades ago. I think this will help people realize that we are not so different after all, and there is no reason to fear or mistrust people from other nations.

Side: Yes

World peace deserves hope, but the only solution is human cooperation through free markets and trade without the use of coercion by some third party.

Side: Yes

I wish the answer was yes, but I don't think it will ever happen. People will always find something to fight about. The only way I see world peace happening is if scientists figure out a way to tweak our minds so that every person on the planet agrees on everything.

Side: No

Well I guess you are right about that.

I highly doubt it, too many people disagree with each other and start fights/arguments about it. I'm not saying it's impossible but it's very far out of reach and doesn't look very achievable right now.

Obviously I can't say for certain, but the answer is most likely no.

World peace under the best conditions is a world without war, minimal fighting and arguing, and 100% tolerance for everyone and everyone having the exact same rights and privileges or at least accepting that there is a reason that they don't have the same rights or privileges.

The most likely out of this I can see happening, is the end of all wars, and everyone being ensured the exact same rights, but so long as people have opposing viewpoints like we do on religion, absolute tolerance, will not exist. There are people on this site who can't stand the other side of the religious spectrum. They were bred to by their parents, and will do the same to their children.

If people are all ensured the same rights, people who may feel more entitled will not be tolerant to those who have the same rights as them.

The poverty gap will be a big enough reason that world peace will never happen. Unhappy poor people will not feel happy or will not be peaceful while being taxed the same as the rich people, while the rich people will not feel happy, and may even rebel for being taxed more than the poor people.

There are too many people, and too many factors for world peace to be an attainable goal.

The best chance for "world peace" would have been at a time when the worlds human populations were at their lowest. I submit that as long as there are more than two or three people on the planet (and they can find one another?) There will be no such thing as complete "peace."

Why does it matter. He simply argued accordingly to the debate. Why go for a post like that?

Humans, from a general stand point, will always have some sort of dispute with other humans. I see it as almost inevitable.

Violence is in our nature and progress is an ally of war. It's an ugly truth, but science and warfare go hand-in-hand. World peace is actually bad for science.

Unfortunately, nations can't live peacefully together, so, world peace will not happen.
