Detention does serve a purpose, yes students might not care or learn much, but it's better than sitting at home, watching t.v., playing video games, or wandering around the neighborhood not learning anything at all. Once they get suspended they'll most likely get suspended again then get expelled or dropout of high school and do nothing for the rest of their lives.
