Does detention actually serve a purpose?

It is of my opinion that detention is a good alternative to corporal punishment. I also believe that detention can be a form of teachers abusing their powers. However, one reason why i feel that detention is useful is for the simple fact that if you punish students using corporal punishment, they tend to become violent and in come cases, tend to retaliate against the method punishment by continuing to engage in school or classroom misconduct. However, in detention, students are given a chance to contemplate on their actions and boredom itself is a form of punishment. Also, in detention, students should not only be detained but their behaviors at issue should be indentified and there should be some sort of strategy that can be implemented to address their source of misconduct. I also believe that whilst in detention, extra writing should be a form of punishment. Students sometimes hates being alone and they hate missing out on the good times with their friends or being late for some activity so in some cases, they may be at their best behavior to avoid detention. YES IT DOES... At school there was this exact debate and education Queensland said the purpose is for the child to realize what they have done is wrong. You could go three, four times for the something but this will be because they are a slow learner and takes them a while to realize what they have done is wrong. If your child is been bullied you will obviously want the child suspended but once their at home who said their parent will get angry at them so to the kid it will be a "holiday". Side: Yes it does
What does detention do besides leave a kid in a classroom to do nothing? Some detentions may be useful though, such as detentions that force kids to study or do their homework. These kind of detentions would actually be useful but I never see these kind of detentions take place. Another problem is that making any human being sit and wait in a completely blank room (Yes, that was a jab at the strict fire-code policies) will do 1 of 2 things, 1 It will freak the kid out making the time torturous, or 2 It will make the kid want to take revenge by doing something bad while IN detention! Detention is like jail. Once you go in, you want to come out. Its purpose is to teach students how to be good and respectful to others. Nobody has the right to hurt others emotionally or physically without permission. You don't have the right to call me names that i don't want to be called. But if i allow you to call me the "b' word or the "f" word, go ahead because there is nothing wrong. In other words, detention teaches student on what is permitted and what is not permitted. It teaches them to be respectful of other people wishes. Permission is the key factor because everybody have their own lines of respect and disrespect. Is it neccessary. Honestly, no. I wish detention can be changed to Therapy. You can fear someone to not comit a crime because of the scary nature of prison. But fear can vanish. If you do therapy, you can unlock deep hidden issues to why the person did what he/she did. I can't say if these issues may rise again within the mind, but the results are better than fear. Its purpose is to teach students how to be good and respectful to others. I have experienced the drudgery of detention many times and have deduced its purpose; to break the will of its participants. It is a tool designed to "break" students, as it were, like young colts. Inevitably, it fails. It does not address the problem, it merely reacts inappropriately to its consequences. Nobody has the right to hurt others emotionally or physically without permission. We enquire as to what constitutes permission, who has the right to give it, and by what mandate it permits? You don't have the right to call me names that i don't want to be called. And teachers do not possess the right to incarcerate students for said offence. Calling somebody names does not constitute criminal activity, and school authorities have no democratic mandate by which to punish it. They do so because they have no fear of intervention by any relevant authority; because they can. But if i allow you to call me the "b' word or the "f" word, go ahead because there is nothing wrong. You appear to operate under the illusion that calling somebody names is the only act which is punished with detention. I have been punished chiefly because of my refusal to wear the school jumper, which is made with poor quality materials, is ugly (it's grey!) and causes my skin to itch. Every time I am discovered, I am sent to A3 to transcribe a document which for some nefarious purpose has had every "E" removed, and every time I amuse myself by writing an essay on the defects of communism. I still refuse to wear it. In other words, detention teaches student on what is permitted and what is not permitted. You are suggesting that students who can analyse poetry, solve complex differential equations and speak multiple languages cannot comprehend the concept of rules without being detained for breaking them? I submit an alternate hypothesis; we do not care for the rules, and are not intimidated in the slightest by the threat of detention. Honestly, no. I wish detention can be changed to Therapy. "Do you have nightmares about the jumper, Rupert?" No. "Do you fantasise about murdering the jumper, Rupert?" No. "Do you believe the jumper constitutes a threat to society, Rupert?" No. Etcetera ad infinitum. But fear can vanish. I submit that the temporariness of fear is neither its sole nor its primary defect as a means of controlling behaviour. But fear can vanish. If you do therapy, you can unlock deep hidden issues to why the person did what he/she did. Methinks the notion that teenage rebellion stems from unresolved personal issues is ludicrous. Dentention is up to an hour, not up to 20 years. It doesn't teach you anything other than how to waste time. The only time I really showed disrespect to teachers is when it was being shown to me. The Teachers are not always right and the punishment of detention treats you otherwise. It teaches you to hate the suppressors and not to embrace the often need neutrality you need within the playground. It honestly sounds like you were probably bullied in school and have no idea of what it is like to get a detention. It's a slap on the wrist. Fear should not be the only reason as to not offend. The benefits of be socially well behaved should be well demonstrated, but this is often not the case in schools. Sure you may get a certificate for behaving, but honestly wtf does a peice of paper mean to me? It just always seems the world is out to punish you when you're a school; Why aggrevate this further? Detention does serve a purpose, yes students might not care or learn much, but it's better than sitting at home, watching t.v., playing video games, or wandering around the neighborhood not learning anything at all. Once they get suspended they'll most likely get suspended again then get expelled or dropout of high school and do nothing for the rest of their lives. Side: Yes It Does

Little shits will always be little shits. Internal Suspensions and Picking up rubbish is alot more productive and a worse penaltly. I used to get dentions, alot of detentions (weeks on end) but i still got to see all my friends, because half of them were in there and the detention only lasted for half of lunch. The idea of dentention is very old fashioned and schools need to come up with more productive ways of punishing kids. Side: No It Doesnt
It's basically just annoying for kids. It's not really cutting into anything except keeping them from whatever pointless crap they were going to do anyway. And they usually have detention with a friend anyway. At my school detention is basically just to catch up with work or retake quizzes/ tests. It's not a punishment. Side: No It Doesnt
What is detention? It's 45 minutes of your life, spent staring at walls, when you could be doing something useful. Do you really think that the people in detention are "self-reflecting" or whatever? They think of detention as a 45 minutes to sleep or doodle on the desks. They don't care. Side: No It Doesnt

Okay, so this is how detention works: So you get in trouble for a reason. Then you go to detention. You sit there and do nothing. People say it "teaches kids a lesson". Let me ask you this: Do kids really learn something when sitting in a classroom doing nothing? All it does is that it makes kids stressed out even more than what they did wrong in the first place. It keeps kids from their home for more time because they are in detention. That is bad because if kids have an emergency going on, they cannot go. I believe it is a bad thing and does not teach kids anything, in fact, it sometimes teaches kids less because if they have a program, club, or whatever right after school, they can't go to it because they are stuck in detention. My point is that detention is pointless and does nothing good to the student. Side: No It Doesnt

I believe there is no way detention, in any situation, is a solution to a problem. If a student misbehaves, there is usually a reason. It may be something to do with their personal lives: Home or Social. Finding the source of the problem can be more useful. Example: If I got a detention for swearing at a teacher, my reason would usually be because I'm not getting the help I need, I don't get asked my opinion or I'm being yelled at for something that wasn't my fault. If a teacher asked me why, I would definitely tell them the problem and get it solved. Side: No It Doesnt

I have been in detention many times and not once have I done any self reflection. What would help would be to put them into an hour of community service. Some children just want to feel cool and like a badass therefore detention makes them seem cool to their friends. Side: No It Doesnt
the reason i think it doesn't serve a purpose is because some kids don't learn from there mistakes and end up there week after week after week and they think its cute and funny and try to make people laugh. no discipline that the schools give the children can do anything for them. its nothing we can do its just bad parenting skills who just don't care what there children do and the kids no that so they keep repaying there actions. Teachers can give out detentions for the most retarded reasons, and some teachers are just privilege-abusing dicks. No matter what you did, the detention still goes onto your permanent record. When you try to get into a good university, all they'll look at is how many detentions you've gotten, and won't even bother checking the reason for why you were sentenced to it. Side: No It Doesnt

Detentions aren't that affective to kids. They sit in a room and wait, sometimes the kids writing something, but when it's done they wait anyway. Detentions aren't affective because some kids don't care. They want a detention to get attention from other kids, that's all so its like "I win" for the kid. And also teachers do bad things, so why don't they get a detention? Side: No It Doesnt

Teachers expect students to behave by forcing them to stare at a wall and calling it "detention". This would most likely not do anything if the teachers expect students to "reflect on themselves" or "Think about what they did". It would make them want to do it even more since the teachers just wasted their time. the students would try their best to cause more stress as revenge. Side: No It Doesnt
