Antonin Scalia: Thus Is Departed a True American

Absolutely

Side Score: 7

Good riddance

Side Score: 2

I mean he was an American citizen, and he died, so yeah, I suppose thus departed a "true American".

Never liked the term "True American". Seems to imply that people we dislike are somehow less American.

He had a few good rulings, he had some very bad rulings. I disagreed with him on most things but he was an influential and well spoken individual.

Feel bad for notorious RBG though. They were pals, somehow.

An American, to be sure.

Could it be that GOD is trying to tell U.S. something, and Mitch McConnell (and the like), is not willing to listen??

Rest in peace and, lets get on with Obama's choice to replace him. Four of the five last appointees were placed within a year of an election. Blocking this would be another rape of the Constitution by those who think it belongs to THEM ONLY! Blocking has resulted in a much slower than we would have liked recovery, and by the ones that call our President "un-Constitutional". That's the "cat calling the kettle, BLACK!"

But in this case the Kettle really is black...

That said, they won't let him appoint a replacement. They've had no issue setting new precedent in regards to Congressional obstruction, so I don't see any reason they would suddenly hesitate now.

Harry Reid is the king of obstructionist. He has no right to open his big mouth on moving along bills or nominees, and he has already started complaining. HA HA

Get real! The American peope spoke the last elections and we have a majority of Republican senators for a reason! To take the people's voice away and give it to this idiot liar and chief would once again show the extremism in the Democrat Party.

The Constitution made sure no President could EVER soully appoint someone as important as a Supreme court justice who will hold the position for life. It must be confirmed by the Senate to prevent this nation becoming a dictatorship with one extremist politician over riding the people's voice.

Right, "appointees was a bad word, I know all of what you pointed out. But he does nave the right to pick a replacement, confirmed by the other two legislative branches. The 'UN-Constitutional" part is the conservatives demanding to stack the court with one party ideals. There are more people with other ideas that have to be considered. You've had the court stacked for over two decades. About time WE (Americans) got the advantage. Under YOU the country has turned into something YOU don't like. Always looking to take America and make something else out of it. I liked it the way it was PRE-Reagan. Since then that stuff trickling down on us ain't money! The government has been dysfunctional since the "Contract with America" garbage, and conservatives cry like babies when they don't get their wa. "Our way or the highway!" (Wait a minute ... they don't want highways!" They just want to close all National Parks, shut down the EPA, turn over our schools to corporations and billionaires, take away our health care and "replace it with "something" else (controlled by the filthy rich insurance cartels), crush the 47% (most of which consists of veterans, the elderly and sick, non-taxable religions, children under the age of taxation,, workers whose jobs were sold to China and elsewhere, corporations (like GE) who work to pay no taxes. The list goes on and on. (Mostly) AMERICANS who need help ... mostly. The SCOTUS is supposed to be for WE, the people, not YOU the only people who can have an opinion! (So you think.)

THAT'S, "getting real"!

Looks like Obama's comment could come back to bite him in the ass. "Elections have consequences." Yes, they do. The people gave Republicans the House and Senate. Deal with it Obama. There is no constitutional law that says the Republicans have to approve any of his nominees. They should either hold off til the next president is sworn in OR they can hold hearings and vote down the nominee. After all, the Democrats denied two potential justices before Scalia was confirmed, so there is precedent for the Republicans to vote down two nominees. By that time, the election will be over. What comes around goes around.

So they have two options: They lie to voters faces about their rational and vote down every nominee (politically reasonable), or they simply "hold off" their Constitutional obligations.

The former is pathetic, but at least makes sense from a political standpoint. The latter is just the height of hypocrisy and immaturity, and would undermine any claim for Constitutional loyalty.

He was arrogant, self righteous, contrarian, favored the wealthy over the poor, favored the mainstream majority over minorities, favored men over women, and didn't give a d@mn about what anyone else thought about him. Yes, he was a true American.
