The average child is no longer being taught knowledge in schools, but skills.

What are you basing this on?

we no longer have lesson repeating key dates in history or the capital cities of the world.

Maybe where you come from, but here in Ireland these things are still taught.

Sure, we learn how to do complicated things and write out essays but are we knowing as much as we used to?

So long as a child's education is relevant to them what does it matter if the previous generation knew more facts?

Another problem I see is knowledge amongst this generation being "generalized", knowledge is now shared through media and Internet and we're being shown what to think and what to know.

I would argue that knowledge these days is far more accessible to all, giving people a chance to know what they want, and through new media there is a chance to explore the options with a greater deal of clarity. Also, I believe kids now think more for themselves and develop their own individuality via said media, they are given a platform to express themselves, one that was not available to previous generations.

An example is the fact that hardly any boys in our modern society can name any key things about the Franco-Prussian war or the Hundred Years war despite their advanced knowledge on military weapons and vehicles, which they've learned through games.

So what, why does an interest in weaponry have to equate with a knowledge of Historical wars?

Another sign is the fact that children suddenly seem to know what are "cool" words to say and what they should do to become popular.

This is not a new concept.

but I have yet to meet any of my fellow students who can build a go-cart or craft a fishing rod, skills which nearly all the boys in the past would know how to do.

Nearly all the boys in the past? Where are you getting this information?

the case is that there are a lot of entertainments, so sometimes it is difficult to concentrate on learning (reading books, visiting libraries) for children... and nobody knows what we did having all these amusements

Years of inbreeding and you expect a smart one ?

The next generation is dumbed down through programming and their inattentive parents. Though strapped to technology early on, they have no sense as to doing things on their own. They have no idea how to utilize critical thinking/reasoning, and they're more sheltered. Through present day media, and their stupid parents, society at large- they've got no chance.

Actually, i think,no.Next generation is not becoming more stupid. Maybe even vice versa, they are becoming more inquisitive and possess a wide range of knowledge especiallly in IT. Maybe the new generation usually does not read classical books, study hard at schools, but generally at the young age they sometimes know more than their parents do, because they are smarter, self-seeking or even a bit selfish.

the recent generation is knowledgable in virtual things, typing up a word document or using Microsoft excel may be a skill, but what happens if the world's power shuts down permenantly due to some global catastrophe.

i don't think so, on the contrary, this young generation is "indigo".... unique, bright children...let me give an example, while we skipped, played cards on the street, these children use computers adroitly and other household appliances, and you must admit they are more developed in some spheres...

moreover, nowadays children study at school for 11-12 years, some of them studies for the whole day... teachers are more qualified, consequently they can give more knowledge..
