Unemployment: Should you milk collecting benefits if you're able to work?

If you've worked hard all your life and suddenly find yourself unemployed due to the economy or due to circumstances beyond your control, then applying for, and accepting unemployment benefits is a right. Each state may have its own regulations with regard to how the benefits are distributed, but looking for a new job is usually high on the list of "must do" activities. If you are a talented and experienced individual, you may get job offers right away -- but that doesn't mean you should accept the first, second or third offer that comes your way. You have every right to milk the benefits until they run out -- OR -- until YOU are ready to return to the workforce. You've worked hard. This is like a "paid vacation," something you're not likely to have anytime soon after you begin working again.

Side: Yes, you've worked for them.

Since someone has paid through deductions on his/her paycheck, then the benefactor has every right to milk it for all its worth.

Side: Yes, you've worked for them.

Not only is it unethical it's rather a silly idea in today's economy to turn anything down when we're in the middle of such a job crisis. If you're planning on playing one off against the other until one of them makes you the right offer, I should think you are still being quite foolish! Jobs are disappearing like flies because people are jumping on them and there isn't much to choose from day to day or week to week even if you think you're the "creme de la creme."

Side: No, it's unethical.
