Well, it depends on what you want out of life. If you want a good, stable career, mastering one skill is your ticket in. If you're the more artsy or philosophical type, I've found that having knowledge about a lot of shit as being useful. Although, I consider myself to be a prodigal genius who excels his knowledge in many aspects (of course, I have my limitations, but Stephen Hawking can't move, so ha). If you knew something about everything you would be better off in life. For example, if you were in an isolated burning building, knowing alot about parrots isn't going to help much. That may be a weak example but my point is that if you know just alot of things about a certain topic, there are going to be alot of situations in which you can't apply your field of knowledge in. Well I don't need to know something about everything, my goal in life is to become a film director, and I've been studying (practical and theory) like you wouldn't believe for the past two years. So I would much rather know everything there is to know about directing over knowing a bunch of pointless things very unlikely to come in handy to me at any point in my life. Saying that, if I was given the opportunity to just magically know everything there was to know about directing I would refuse. Why? Well simply because I want to accomplish things myself, it gives me a sense of self pride and accomplishment. Side: Everything about One thing
I'd personally prefer to know everything about one specific field. That way you can totally focus on it properly, not get distracted, and maybe if it makes you successful in life and happy then there would be no reason for more unnecessary information clouding your mind.
