Becoming nothing, having the screen go blank.

How is that frightening? It sounds just like sleep.

50 char rule is annoying

An unending sleep.

All that one has accomplished becomes nullified. There is no going back - your thoughts, desires, dreams: over.

Whereas, with religion, one can look forward to heaven (whether or not you believe it exists, to those that do believe it exists, the thought for some strange reason is comforting).

as many others have already stated, eternal nothingness is pretty fuckin' scary. It's not like sleep, because in sleep you at least dream. And it's not scary to fall asleep (in case you don't dream) because you know you're going to wake up and be back to normal.

Sometimes... I really fear death. It makes me wish that I could believe in God.

Technically, you don't know if gravity is going to work tomorrow. There is a pattern, and its pretty reliable that it will continue but you can't be 100% sure. You could die in your sleep, and not ever wake up. Something terrible could happen to you well your asleep, and you're in a powerless state to stop it. If it does then you will experience it when you wake up. That seems more terrifying then Eternal nothingness to me. Eternal nothingness is a lack of experience, there is literally nothing there to harm you, hurt you, surprise you etc. I don't see anything scary in it.

A afterlife could exist without god.

Yeah, you could die in your sleep. Although, at least then you wouldn't notice that you're dying. But on a daily basis, i don't fear sleep just because I could die in my sleep. Same reason why I don't fear driving just because I could die in a car accident. What happens after death, itself, is the scary part.

The idea of dying is the scary part. Once you die, you're in eternal nothingness. But if you're about to die or waiting to die, thinking that your mind will go blank for eternity is scary as shit.

Not being able to comprehend non-existence, because it must by definition be beyond our capacity to experience. The closest one can get is imagining the time between sleeping and waking up, that period of unconsciousness where no thought occurs and it feels as if one moment has become the next.

We're not afraid of sleep. If death is similar to sleep, what is there to really fear? Death must be by definition outside our capacity to experience, but we can comprehend not existing. Every night we experience the lack of consciousness or rather we experience losing it only to later regain it with no recollection of events between, if death is just like a never ending sleep then we know it well.

I accept that it is like sleep, but I was referring to how we can't know it because even though we sleep, we can't experience a lack of experience, it's contradictory. In other words it's a fear of the unknown.

The end of all you know, never seeing your, friends and family again. The fact of the matter is that even devoutly religious people fear death which is a bit ridiculous as if they have followed the rules to the letter they should be embracing the afterlife, the truly religious should not fear death atheists actually should. There is no heaven or 20 virgins or nirvana or any of that sort of thing only the end and thats it.

nirvana sounds a lot like nothing, just the end; but with a positive spin.

Your works continue on in the world. Your friends and family do become separated from you, but since your dead you won't experience it. why should we be afraid of something we won't experience? You can feel afraid/sorry for your family i suppose, since they will experience the lack of you; which can indeed be a terrible feeling. That fear comes more from empathy, then from death though.

The truly religious should know themselves as saved, but some of the people they love are going to hell. They will experience the separation between themselves and loved ones. Also, perhaps they are not 100% sure god will allow them to enter the gates of heaven; and will fear hell. Perhaps their religion's version of heaven might not sound desirable either, earth might be for them and they are afraid of leaving it for something they would enjoy less.

There not being an afterlife though, is like a never ending restful sleep. I see very little to fear in it.

Many people believe near immortality is within reach. Through gene therapy, the aging process could be defeated.

This would of course create many problems as the treatment would only be available to those who could afford it, not to mention the problem of over-population once the treatment became widely available and affordable.

At any rate, all progress will be halted unless a cure can be found for the disease known as Islam that seeks to destroy the western world and take us all back to the dark ages.

So, to get back to the topic, I fear for my loved ones who will be left to fend for themselves in an increasingly Islamic west...but then again, the question posed was about fear of death without religion.

Unfortunately for you there is no way we can live without religion. The reason why we are on earth is to fully follow God's preferred religion. And if you don't follow this religion, God will punish you in grave, and after Resurrection you will go to hellfire. Please read this book http://extremelysmart.wordpress.com/download-my-book/ especially the chapter "Had We Used Our Intelligence"

You're wrong. I live without religion and so do many others.

There is no god and no afterlife. You're just trying to use fear.
