Can Video Games actually tell a story similar to a novel or film?

First I'm not talking Call of Duty but rather games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age.
Personally I felt the Red Dead Redemption felt like a novel or an old western film the likes of which made Clint Eastwood popular.

John Marston's story is long and fulled with trials and we become very attached to him despite knowing little of his past.
Assassin's Creed II through Revelations I felt were novel like in that we see Ezio grow from just a childlike womanizer to a stern grown man who rebuilds the Assassins after suffering the many losses in his life.

What do you all think can video games tell a good nartive similar to a novel or film?

Of course. You will just live the life of that person. For example L.A. Noire could be based off of true events and maybe you could follow the exact story. I am sure you can do this as a video game designer. Call of Duty could even follow the life of maybe one particular marine or soldier from a certain war and make you live his life I mean it is extremely possible.

Just look at games like Bioshock and Half-Life. If the plots were written down and read fifty years ago they'd be literary classics!

Yes , ever heard of Metro 2033 ? I tried the demo first then I bought both the game and the novel , of course the game might tell a short story to you but its the atmosphere that gives you the feeling .
