How Would the World Be Without the Internet?

How would the world be if the Internet never existed?

Simply put, better or worse?

Then we men would have to pay for porn at cathouses or w/e which would help boost the economy!

But also the entire advertising sector of the internet would crumble, as would ebay, amazon, etc. leading to a much weaker economy.... plus who would go to a cathouse to watch porn... i mean.. wth?

Side: Worse

There would be economic trouble if the internet stopped today; but the point of the debate is more centered around what the world would be like if the internet never existed. I should have specified that.

Don't get me wrong. I love the internet. But everytime my parents tell me stories of their past, I realize how much better it would have been to live in the 1960's. Before the dawn of the internet, children could stay out at all hours of the day. Nowadays, a child can't go five feet from his mother without her freaking out over predators. I feel this is a direct effect of the online predators. There would be obvious drawbacks, but the world as a whole would be better. I'm sure obesity would be slightly lower in America, as well.

Side: Better

I can no longer imagine the world without the Internet! It has brought a world of information and people to our finger tips and that has made life so much easier and interesting. Had we never known it, we certainly wouldn't miss it but it is here and each of us has the chance to enrich our knowledge because of it.

We have the opportunity to interact with people all over the world which is wonderful if you speak other languages and can hop over to one of the "Yahoo" sites and game sites like "Pogo" who give you the chance to visit or play along with people from other lands in their own language. You can almost interact with people from your own little corner of the world, if it's big enough!

You can sell anything, buy anything and even auction off things that you have no need for over at "eBay" or "Craig's List" There is almost nothing you cannot find on the Internet and compare prices too by taking a look at "Price-Grabbers" or "Shop.com" as well as many others. The most popular and biggest 'department store' on the net has to be "Amazon" and I'm certainly one of their best customers! Free shipping and dollars off coupons for most virtual stores are to be had as well. You can even get and accumulate money buying through "Mr. Rebate" and also find general coupons for shopping off the net!

All in all, the Internet is here to stay if we can keep a step ahead of the hackers and you keep your computers protected from all manner of scams out there. Being home 24/7 I'd be lost without it.

Side: Worse

I have to correct you on something or it will drive me nuts! Hackers are actually the good guys. The technical geek term for the bad guys are crackers- they're the one's that crack the codes. This is to all those computer language nerds out there.

p.s. I'm not one but my friends would kill me if I didn't correct you. :)

(One more thing, most anti virus programs are a waste of money, I haven't had one in 6 years and guess what?! No viruses to date.

cheers

The internet keeps us all knowing what is going on. The internet allows us to talk with people on the other side of the world without running a gigantic telephone bill. You can learn a lot from different perspectives and without the internet you would not have createdebate.com. There are a few negatives to internet like loseing your identity or cc numbers to hackers, but hey thats a risk you take if you use the internet. It is a risk you take when you put your info out there.

You don't lose that stuff until you put it out there. "Be careful what you do with your information" should be the number one rule of the internet.

I'm not sure if we would be worse off. It's very hard to say. I can say this though, the information age that started with the internet threw the world into a conundrum. On one side we say give me info! And then you have the other side saying, hold on one sec, how much info are we willing to put out? Then you, of course, have those with interests at hand, specifically those in power. And when you have power the last thing you want to do is lose it. The internet has been a threat to many but I really think it was created for the people. It is our civil duty to respect it and the use it for it's fully intended purpose. three simple letters: www aka The World Wide Web. Even simpler put, information through communication. (that's the dot. com part) It's basic evolution that we were going to go through at some point. A basic human trait is to make things simple and efficient. Since things like telepathy are so complex, the internet is today's solution until something bigger and better comes a long. (i'm hoping for telepathy ;)

If it was never invented, well, its hard to say, there are so many pros AND cons.

Internet is a sign of great progress, it has changed the way we live by making it easier and cheaper to get information. The internet also speeds up the process of things by sharing information, research can be done faster, drugs can be made faster and so on. It has also created innovation with the rest of technology. The world without Internet would be the same as the world before the internet was popularized. Slower moving innovation, less money in the economy and less employment. People would continue with the same level of happiness but continue to live in a less efficient environment.

I belive without Internet the world would be more separate. We are all trying to be citizens of the world and it would be harder if the Internet does not exist. Globalization would be something utopian for humanity.

PS: I tried to make a short and concrent answer.

Unlike people born after 2000, I can actually remember the pre-Internet world. Technically, the Net EXISTED, but so few people had even heard of it, that for all intents and purposes, it didn't exist. The only things to do back in the day were to go out somewhere: shopping, movies, restaurants, the park, bike ride, long vacation, etc., watch TV, read a book, play games or do... other things... Ahem!

Since I was a kid, my time was spent mostly watching TV, reading books or riding my bike. When I got older, I added listening to the latest top 40 bubble gum pop music to that repertoire.

The thing is, now that I've been using the Net for the past 16 years, I don't know how I got through my childhood without being bored to tears. I just know that if I had to give up the Net and all the fine tech gizmos that have exploded in just the past ten years, I'd just die of boredom! I'd ever so much rather watch YouTube than just sit in front of the TV. At least on YouTube, I can pick whatever video I want to watch, whereas with TV, you simply have to watch what's on at the moment, unless you have DVDs, but you can only watch those so much without getting bored.

So yeah... In conclusion, I'd say that while I could probably survive without the Net, I wouldn't enjoy it very much!

Side: Worse

Too many people are accustomed to the Internet and would go bonkers it if was not around for a single day.
