Social media has dramatically exploded onto the scene since the past decade, with the number of hours spent on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter increasing by 82%. The question to all of us is, what does this mean?

This means that social media, has really made us less "social".

With the increasing time that one spends on such social networking sites, even though meant to be social, area they really social? One way of looking at it is looking at the core definition of the word "social", which means a relationship between people. By being on social networking sites, this means that people aren't as social in real life as they were, decades ago. With the increasing time spent on social networking sites, it would adversely affect one's communication skills, being detrimental to a person's social skills.

Obviously, every light has a shadow, and every shadow needs a light.

Also, even though social media is supposed to be social, people in the society spent way too much time on such media sites, which defeated the purpose of the site itself. I am sure many of the developers of such sites, did not expect a majority of people to spend more than 6 hours a month on such sites. Most just expected the site to be used for trivial things, such as organising events and gatherings, not for personal blogs and walls, which affects a person's ability to communicate in real life.

Many arguments also happen on social networking sites and media, because the level of communication on such sites are quite limited. 70% of communication is from body language, which means that misunderstandings often occur throughout social media. This, is also detrimental to being "social".

In all, I think we must learn to draw the line, a deep fine line that tells are where to stand. So question yourself, are you really less social? In my opinion, we are.

Do you get into more arguments online or offline. Do you use hateful language online more offline. Do you talk to certain people online but barely acknowledge them in real life?

Social Media takes a lot of time. At least this was in most cases. The whole day we are busy to connect with each other. We send a tweet, we change our status on Facebook or we change the status on our LinkedIN profile. But if we meet each other in ‘real life’, face to face, and there is a small silence we grab our smartphones and do whatever. Making a quick sidestep to the digital world, you might miss something! We’re using inanimate objects to convince ourselves that even when we’re alone, we feel together. And then when we’re with each other, we put ourselves in situations where we feel alone, constantly on our mobile devices. It’s what some call “a perfect storm of confusion about what’s important in our human connections”.

It’s not the people around us that do this. When I am on Facebook I always felt the need to check it whenever the world around me wasn’t that interesting. In every meeting, for instance, I checked my phone more than a few times an hour! Nowadays I realize that the digital world, which is also part of the real world, was (and still is sometimes) of way too much value to me. So many new ways to share less personal things with each other. Time to go outside. We have to interact with each other - in quality and not in quantity - or we would be reduced to Brave New World standerds of social-politics.

Nowadays more and more pupil and most importantly youngsters are using social media increasing more compared to talking to their parent or the social world around them. Facebook which is one out of many other social media, has increased by 69% in US in the past year alone. This is slowly taking over our social world. This might cause us to loose the ability to socialise with other people and interacting with them which may come in handy when we go to work. Also the fact that we are not interacting with our parents may cause us to turn against them when we disagree with them.

Concluding, facebook and other platforms have made us less social which may to a major disaster.

I agree that social media today has made people less social. The use of social media takes up a huge percentage of a person's attention, even when the person is currently present with someone else. The use of social media will divert the attention of the person from maybe an on going conversation or activities in a group. For example, two people may be eating lunch together, but instead of what is expected, which would be them conversing with each other, both their eyes are glued to the screen throughout the meal, looking at whatever social media has possessed them. This shows that social media has decreased significantly the amount of physical, social, interaction between people in our world today.

It is true that social media has brought us closer over time, making the world feel smaller. However, with social media becoming more of the norm, people are losing face-to-face communication and majority of users type more profanities. In reality, neighbours are losing the close, friendly bonds they have like the past. As social media is on an online platform, it is easy for people to speak their minds without thinking. Like that, unknowingly, use of profanities online becomes common.

I agree that social media has made people less "Social". This is evident from how many users of technology and social media are constantly having their eyes glued on devices even when with another person during an outing. Social media has caused people to let out their emotions online, hence they do not feel comfortable sharing them even with loved ones face to face. This shows how social media has made people more and more awkward and uncomfortable in the physical presence. In my opinion, the real meaning of "social" is physical, in person interaction.

I agree that Social media has made us less 'social'.

It is true that social media has allowed us to communicate with one another without being physically around each other. But I feel that Social media has more cons than pros.

I feel that Social Media has disabled us humans to communicate with one another as effectively as being physically present. This is evident as people are starting to become more and more reliant in Social media to express their thoughts and feelings about any certain topic. This shows that, without the presence of Social media, people will not be able to communicate with one another physically while still being effective.

I agree. Social media has been based off from the younger generation, who tend to be introverted, cold and shy, most possibly due to heavier peer pressure and reliance on the new type of social media. Many popular social media sites, like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, allows users to freely express themselves on cyberspace, since they may too shy or detached to do so. Most teens and children tend to view themselves as having their own self-esteem and dignity, and before social media came about there were more physical interaction and bonding as there was a lack of more anonymous and distinct platforms to express themselves indirectly to the social media world as a whole. Examples of this is the popular "Teen Posts", where teenagers admit their common feelings, opinions and other adjustments they feel as a whole about life, that are sometimes embarrassing or hurting their self-esteem to say in public but are instead harbored inside themselves. Because of the fact that communication, feelings and expressions can be spread out just by one touch on a mousepad or keyboard, it may be so that all the confessions of one generation end up spilling out, caused mostly by self-felt mutual ranking and ultimately, peer pressure. But when everything can be put on cyberspace it makes physical communication seem inconvenient, especially when any expression or communication can be made online, seen online, and reputed online, if by definition sociality and socializing is meant as physical interaction then this is why I feel social media has made physical sociality less convenient and necessary.

No, I do not agree with the statement that social media has made us less social.

I believe social media has just made us a different type of social. Even though face-to-face interaction has declined, internet interaction has become a platform for people to voice their thoughts. This is a effective way of getting across things like important massages, or simple casual conversations or even a simple way of getting massages across to a large amount of people. For example, in the unfortunate case that someone goes missing, the news would spread like wildfire online such as Facebook, compared to just pasting up poster in public places.

I do not agree that social media has made us less 'social'. Social media is what makes it easier for us to socialize. It enables us to be able to interact without having to go out of the house just to have a chat. This technology helps us connect with friends whether they are across the globe or living in your block. It helps us be updated much faster and more efficiently as it is all compiled into one page.

I do not agree that social media makes us less 'social'.

Social media is still a form a social activity as social media is a useful way for others to communicate with each other. Social media is a platform that others can use to keep in touch anytime, anywhere. Social medias such as Facebook and Twitter are popular platforms made for socializing in a fast and convenient way rather than meeting up face to face. Although some people think that face to face meeting is more meaningful, it is easier to communicate via social media as it is easier to set up meetings and talk.

Dawn: I do not agree that social media causes us to be less social in person. I think that people being anti-social in real life has noting to do with them being active on social media or not. I have seen many who are inactive on social media, as well as in their social life, vice versa. Unlike popular belief, social media is not always a negative thing. Social media can and is often used as a publicity platform. There are many blogshops that I know on, that use social medias such as Twitter or Facebook to advertise. Even big companies such as Starbucks and Gongcha set up Facebook pages to advertise their new products or offers. And as I have observed, it is very efficient.

One simple example of social media making us more social is the use of facebook and twitter. People now are able to tweet almost anywhere. A person who are far apart example one in Singapore while the other in USA are still able to socialise despite being a few thousand kilometers away from each other. It would be very hard for them to socialise physically. Using this example we can see that social media actually increases the amount of socializing and not less social.

I do not agree that social media has made us less 'social'. As of January 2009, there are over 1.2 billion tweets made on Twitter and there are about 500 million people on Facebook. Social media is growing, and rapidly. Over the past year from 2009 to 2010, there are 69% growth increase in USA alone. Social media is connecting the dots in the world.

Social media helps us to connect people together, even with those far away, as far as to the opposite sides of the world. It helps us keep in touch, communicate, and share our experiences with people worldwide. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, MySpace are the popular sites that allows the netizens to socialize on the net.

There are social media platforms such as YouTube, allows us to upload videos to communicate, to educate, to provide entertainments. This aspect of social media is one major impact due to the audio-visual elements. For example, kpop, as well as other music genres videos, is trending in this current generation and it is growing rapidly. Social media has impacted us all.

However, having said that, social media can sometimes captivate us too much and we end up spending too much time. It is important for us to manage between our reality world and the cyber space. In conclusion, social media is an impact that have become part of our current lives in this modern society. Therefore, although it have become part of our lives, it is still important to take some time out to go and spend some quality time, be it with your friends, your family.

Even if you are communicating with peers online, it is still a form of interaction, thus being social does not only restrict to real life interaction.

Social behavior of humans include provoking a response, or a change of behavior, and social media allows the provoking a response online, and thus keeping a conversation is possible.

Due to the increasing broadband penetration, we are able to communicate with people around the world through websites such as Facebook and Twitter, which we would otherwise would not have a chance to meet up with the person in real life. During cases such as national emergencies, when students and working adults are not able to travel to school or workplaces, they can do their work online, and also keep in touch with updates, anytime.

Due to the higher level of communication, it is also easier to share pictures, news, videos, and most of them are free.

The main reason of a social media site is to encourage people to socialise on a virtual network.

First of all, let me start by asking a question, what do you define as socialise? The dictionary defines it as "to mix socially with others." If you consider social networking sites as "making us less 'social'", what is the point of calling a social networking site a "social" networking site?

Second, social networking sites serve as a platform for the genuine introvert in nature to socialise without feeling unease. Usually, these kind of people do not like to socialise in reality so this is a way to help them.

There are many reasons why social media is a way to socialise but I do not have enough time to write here.

No, I do not agree that social media has made us less 'social'. Students especially, have lesser time to meet up with others due to their busy schedule and thus only have the night free. Thus, the students will socialise with friends and extended family members by using Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms to communicate with them, and will not have spend time leaving the house to meet people.

Social media is a platform for people to communicate with their friends, family members and relatives easily. Social media helps us to communicate with our friends in other countries easily and helps us to spread messages or to raise awareness of certain things.

Therefore, I believe that social media has increased socializing. With social media, we can easily share pictures and videos with our friends. Furthermore, communicating through social media, saves us the time of travelling to meet the person face to face.Social media also helps us to communicate with a group of friends easily.

However, some people believe that social media decreases socializing as nowadays people are interacting properly with their relatives as they feel that communicating with them through social media is enough.

Whether social media makes people less social or not depends on the user and how often he or she uses it. Social media helps us with our daily activities to a large extent and increases socializing.

Social media is called 'social' media for a reason. Although it is true that social media reduces the face to face aspect of being social, social media still enables people to connect with one another, just through a media platform.

Social media helps to connect others whenever they want, connecting through the internet. Social media can help people meet others and be more sociable. Social media helps others to still keep in touch, even when they are not face to face.

Social media especially helps students especially who wish to keep in touch with friends after school times, when they need to go home for whatever reasons. They can use social media to help them communicate with others. x

It is true that social media has removed the need for physically socializing. This does not mean that the amount of socializing is being reduced, in fact it has actually increased. Now with the modern technology we are able to use internet at anytime and anywhere. Since social media uses the internet as a platform it can take place anytime and anywhere. When it is so easy to socialise people tend to socialise more often thus social media has not made us less social but has actually made us more social just in another way.

Social media is a place for us to socialize at, so it obviously make us more social. Many people say that you cannot interact face to face in social media but it actually makes no difference. Only being able to interact by typing does not mean not being able to interact.

Social media can help to 'shrink' the world. People far away can socialise with each other and would feel nearer. For example, if two people in different countries want to communicate with each other, they can use different social media like Facebook and Skype to socialise.

No, I do not agree that social media has made us less 'social'. In fact, I feel that social media has made us much more sociable. Though, it might be true that social media might have reduced physical social bonds between two individual, but with social media individuals can actually communicate anytime and anywhere. As most people have smart phones in today's society, they can easily make use of social sites such as Facebook, Twitter or even Foursquare and Instagram to update their friends on their lives and their friends can easily find out how they are recently. This helps to increase the topics for acquaintances to talk about and become friends eventually. Thus, I feel that social media has made us much more sociable.

No, I do not agree with the statement that Social Media has made has made us less social. Even though it reduces face to face contact, it allows you to have contact with anyone at any point of time, at any place. When you have more contact with a wider range of people, you could also become more mature in your thinking. Thus, no face to face contact does not mean no contact therefore, I disagree with this statement.
