The main reason of a social media site is to encourage people to socialise on a virtual network.
First of all, let me start by asking a question, what do you define as socialise? The dictionary defines it as "to mix socially with others." If you consider social networking sites as "making us less 'social'", what is the point of calling a social networking site a "social" networking site?
Second, social networking sites serve as a platform for the genuine introvert in nature to socialise without feeling unease. Usually, these kind of people do not like to socialise in reality so this is a way to help them.
There are many reasons why social media is a way to socialise but I do not have enough time to write here.
