Should perfume be banned in the workplace?

Shouldn't perfume be banned from the workplace? How horrible is it to work next to someone that has doused theirselves in chemicals? Those tiny molecules float around and get in your eyes and lungs and it can't be good for you. It's man-made chemicals! Don't we have enough pollution without adding more chemicals to the air? Ask yourself would you spray that in your eyes? Would you hold the bottle up and drink it? No? Then why in the world would you want to spray it on your skin? Anything you put on your skin is being absorbed into your body wrecking havoc with your cells. It can't be healthy to be breathing in that all the time. Ever enter an elevator and been assaulted by the perfume from a person long gone? Or walked into work and taken the same sidewalk as someone that you can smell the perfume long after they are gone? Guess what, those chemicals are now in your lungs. Anyone out there sitting by someone at work wearing perfume and you're getting red, watery eyes and runny nose and if you think it's allergies or a cold, well it may just be a reaction to all the perfume chemicals in the air. Or how about headaches or migraines? Perfume is definitely a migraine trigger. We can avoid the ones wearing it in restaurants, grocery stores, etc by moving to another table or getting into a different line at the store, but the majority of us have to work to pay bills and it's really sad when you have to leave jobs cause there is too much perfume being worn in the workplace. They banned smoking cause it was dangerous and bad for the others around them, now why can't they ban perfume at least in the workplace? They can't do allergy tests for reactions to perfume cause the molecules are too small, but next time you pick up that bottle of perfume to spray it on, think about what's inside it and what it's doing to you (and to your co-worker that may be in misery because of you).

Well that's scary enough to know those chemicals are being absorbed into the largest organ of the body, our skin. No, they will probably never ban it. You are right that the companies make billions off unsuspecting people using the stuff and it's in everything. It will just take people the sense not to purchase products containing perfumes. I don't buy the stuff cause it bothers me. I do try to avoid those in the workplace and I'm very nice about it, but the problem is they don't believe you when you say it bothers you. I have switched jobs. Over and over cause of perfume. I shouldn't have to do that and start over all the time. There should be office guidelines at least for those who can't do without it. It should be spritzed on and not doused on. People who wear it can't even smell it on themselves so they douse it on. Ugh.

It is well-known (at least to me) that perfume and other fragrances contain potentially harmful chemicals such as benzaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetonitrile. But, if perfume was banned in the workplace, it would have to be banned everywhere. The fragrance industry makes so much money that it could never get banned. Many thousands would have to die or face serious bodily harm before any kind of regulation on the wearing of perfume/cologne would ever be considered. I like the smell and have never been irritated by it. Move your desk, ask the person not to wear it, switch jobs. . . why would anyone ban something everywhere in the workplace because you don't like it?

There are arguements for and against. Some people can be allergic. Not everybody likes what someone else may be wearing. Sometimes a person puts on too much.

Imagine if everyone were wearing strong perfume/cologne.

On the other hand, just about everything contains perfume of some kind! Soaps, shampoos, hair spray, conditioners, and lotions contain perfume, so you can't always blame the perfume itself. A tiny amount is ok, as long as you can't be smelled from a 3 feet away. So how do you tell someone their perfume "stinks"? You shouldn't! You should be polite about it. A general rule should be established. MODERATION. If too many people complain there's a problem.

Absolutely Not! If someone complains about someone's cologne being strong, perhaps that complainer smells bad.
