There should be year-round school, because of the education it brings. According to The Huffington Post, at risk students tend to get better test scores. Also, if your parent works in the summer, and you have no babysitter, year-round school solves that. One more thing. For all the people who say you get no breaks, that's untrue. Kids get a six-week summer break, and holiday breaks. They go to school for 45 days, and then get 15 weeks off. (nea.org) Side: Yes

Not necessarily. I think it would probably be better to have shorter and more frequent breaks rather than a whole summer off from school because kids tend to forget alot during that period. However its so ingrained in our society itd be hard to make the case for getting rid of it. What we need to have is strong educational and physical summer programs for all students especially those in inner cities. While these programs exist and are easily accessible in more middle class suburban areas, they are severely lacking in low income inner city areas. The result is inner city kids spending long summers inside their homes watching TV because they are unable to go outside due to the dangerous area surrounding thier homes. These kids experience a more significant drop in the retention of what they learned than their suburban counterparts. Side: No
Maybe not year-round school here in America, although that is indeed the norm in many countries. But our kids definately need MORE school. In my state of Michigan, kids in the K-12 grades are only in school 170 days a year! I for one find that absurd. Look...there is no need for them to have three months off in the summer anymore. Do you know why that policy was originally instituted in America? Back in the day when we were primarily an agrarian peoples, many families needed the kids to help out on the farms or ranches in the summer. Needless to say, this is no longer the case. Teachers have it too easy today. In fact, they have been riding the gravy train for a long time now. I know too many lazy school teachers who, when asked what their favorite part of the job is, would smugly replay, "June, July, and August." We do not need to eradicate summer break altogether, however. I would say a 6-week summer break is sufficient. The winter break is too long as well. In my University it is 6 weeks! This is useless and bothersome. Cut it in half. The celebration of Columbus Day is a joke. I for the life of me cannot understand why we still celebrate it as a National Holiday, given all we know about him now. How many of you know that CC never even set foot on the American landmass? Never. Not even close. How many know he enslaved and murdered and mutilated the indigenous peoples he and his men encountered? And we all know he only "discovered" (really?) America by making a navigational blunder of a very high order. Fuck him. LOL Side: No
