If they go to jail and come out they are going to come out as better bullies and may likely upgrade from bulling and go to crime and then if he goes to jail again and comes out he'll be a worse criminal.

Why?

Why "at least 30 days"?

Why not the rest of their lives? Do people really change, after all?

Bullying someone until they kill themself is just indirect murder - whether on purpose or not.

If an adult punched another on daily basis it could be called bulling, and they would be imprisoned for that. Unless you think they should leave without charge then yes, they should go to prison.

If an adult punched another, not even on a daily basis, it would be called Assault and Battery, and they would be imprisoned for that.

Other cases of bullying, Harassment would seem to apply, which is already illegal.

We don't need a separate charge for bullying; in fact, the last thing we need is another rather nebulous law.

i think they should, i mean i have been bullied all my life and sometimes when the bullying gets to severe, i think of to kill myself. But i do think bullies should go to jail and there should by laws that require it. i mean if they go to jail they might come out as a better person. I seen people do that, they can go in as a murder and when they come out they are helping old people cross the street. So i think that jail time might do them some good. Thank You

Ye, they should. Bullying is somewhat a crime and can lead to very SERIOUS things. The bully should know the consequence and go to jail. This way, the bully can see that bullying someone isn't worth going to jail. If the person getting bullied tells an adult, but they don't help, then there is nothing that can be done but for the bully to go to jail. Bullying is serious and there is no need for it. People can commit many other crimes and go to jail, so think of bullying as an harassment crime, therefor the bully should go to jail for this harassment/ threat crime. If the bully is in jail, you would think the problem is resolved. That is why I think the bullies should go to jail..because it's a crime.

Yes, they should. It is a crime all over the U.S.A. It should be resolved this way.

Call me crazy but... I think that bullies, and learning to deal with them, is a vital part of a childs development.

Hi, Crazy.

I think these are some of the things that would most likely be the outcome from getting bullied.

1. Memories of being mentally and physically abused.

2. The victim becomes a bully, because they feel that they need to look tough to ensure that no one will bully them again.

3. Suicide

All negative things. How can it be a vital part of a child's development? Something like this can not generally be good for a child.

It certainly didn't help me any...well it motivated me to find out how to fight and use my innate talent, but only for a negative cause.

If anything good came from bullying then it would be a really rare occurrence.

I consider experiences with bullies to be a vital part of a child's development because bullying, or analogues to it, persist throughout life- often in more subtle ways.

True, experience with a bully can result in memories of being mentally and physically abused. It can also result in empowering memories of standing up for oneself and overcoming adversity.

If we're looking at it from the perspective of a stage in development, a victim becoming a bully temporarily in response to bullying is not necessarily a bad thing; they're learning things from the opposite perspective and providing valuable lessons to others as well. That said, you could also look at this as an example of failing one of lifes tests, so to speak. Compare it to managing money, for example; we can all agree that this is an important life skill to develop, and some people simply don't. Suppose the victim, instead of becoming a bully himself, works with others who are bullied and helps them get through it?

Bullying and suicide do not share a cause-effect relationship. The instinct for survival is extremely strong, such that even those who think they want to commit suicide often can't go through with it. Bullying does not lead to suicide- bullying can be a factor in suicide, but it takes a second seat to poor support structure, oversensitivity from being sheltered, and various other factors that erode the survival instinct.

My experiences being bullied were evidently quite different from yours. I never saw self defense as a negative thing. Maybe it's not necessarily a positive thing, but at worst it's neutral. Bullying taught me that I can be self reliant, that I can stand up to whatever I need to, that I can overcome anything with effort. Bullying taught me to appreciate and protect those who are unable to protect themselves. Bullying also taught me that you can't always trust the system to protect you.

Unless these children are to be growing up in a fantasy world where they'll never encounter adversity in their adult life, dealing with bullies in childhood is a vital stage in development, where the stakes are lower and the support structure more solid than either will generally be in adulthood.

Bullies should not go to jail. However, when the bully causes the death of another, then there is reasonable cause for them to be sent to jail (check the canadian murder law). i know thet this probably is an american dominated site, but cyberbullying isn't limited to america, i happens in other places too.

just wanted to stick my two cents in. in the end, i agree with the idea, but not the question.

Side: NO THEY SHOULD NOT

If someone bullys someone until they kill themselves, that's completely different to bullying. Just as there was someone who videoed their gay roommate having sex, who killed himself, and has been jailed for manslaughter (I believe, haven't read about it in a while), pushing someone to suicide is manslaughter. Bullying, whilst horrible, is no where near as severe as this, and I do not feel it warrants such an extreme reaction.

However, there are many forms of bullying, and any that break other laws (such as beating someone up) do deserve jail. This is due to the other offenses though, and not the bullying itself.

You're one of the few people I've seen that has actually been able to clarify the different aspects of 'bullying' and how they differentiate between each other. Well done.

Bullies should not go to jail for bullying. There is no law that has been put in place that states that anyone can be charged for "bullying." If the situation turns into a true crime than yes, the bully should be charged to the full extent of the law for the crime that was committed. Bullying is wrong and affects people in different ways but unfortunatley there is no law against bullying itself.

I think they should get mental help like going to a psychiatrist i don't think we should go to the extreme of jail. Bullies are no more than people trying to resolve their own problems with violence. I am a person who has been bullied before ,and i think it would be going to far to send a bully to jail.

I beleive that if people get bullied enough to a point that they kill themselves then yes they should go to jail. But I am neutral to this argument because of the fact that if it isn`t a, "you come to school, I will kill you." then the school should take care of the problem.

In what way is this bully engaging in the act for which he is named? What defines a bully? Are you implying people should be locked away for a mildly degrading, somewhat humorous pun made under their breath? If somebody is violently causing harm to a person, then yes they may ought to go jail. Jail is there for both the protection of society and the rehabilitation of those who harm it in fact, or in practice. Verbal bullying, though hurtful to many - I'm not unfamiliar with various methods of bashing, including the highly aggressive (a car and a knife was involved) - is nothing I think should be punishable with jail. At least not until the car and the knife do, on the rare occasion, get involved.

Should we have thought police like in North Korea as well? I don't like bullying, but this is a bit of an overreaction.

Side: NO THEY SHOULD NOT

I am thinking of childhood bullying. Children should be disciplined right away if they are Bullies. If an adult is a Bully and causes someone to commit suicide, the adult Bully should be given a jail sentence.

Side: NO THEY SHOULD NOT

Bullies should not be held accountable for their victims argument. This is so because it was the victim who killed themselves, Not the bully. Suicide is different from murder. So bullies should not be punished for something they did not do. Unless there is proof of evidence that shows that the bully actually killed the victim then i would say otherwise but if it was a suicide it was a SUICIDE. Do not make it into something that it´s not. Sending kids to jail is not the answer and it certainly wont make the situation any better.

I think bullies should not go to jail because, bulling is a stage if you will and even though many commit suicide that is there fault its all choices you choose to feel pain or sadness so you choose to die NO-ONE held a gun to your face a said you must kill your self. Besides if there were jail sentences for in-mature comments then we would all be in jail.
