1. Japan rejected the Potsdam conference which called for unconditional surrender.
2. The Americans warned that they (Japan) had the potential to recieve ruin from the air, the likes of which have never been seen.
3. The threat of invasion would ultimately result in 180 000 American casualties and unkown Japanese civilian casualties.
4. Bombing ultimately saved 500 000 lives.
5. USA needed to show USSR that they were a world power and was warning them not to expand into Europe, "or else."
6. The Japanese accepted all terms of the potsdam conference, except that the emperor will be removed the Americans refused to negotiate.
