Yes, Johnny was justified because someone was going to get killed there, either Ponyboy or Bob. So Johnny had to use self-defense in order for his best friend to not die. He also marked that Socs shouldn't mess with greasers and that they should stay in there territory or else. If he didn't do anything maybe he would have also been killed and Socs would be killing greasers all over. It was also justified because later in the book one Socs said that Bob was never told to stop and that stab that Johnny gave him was the first time that he was told no, so he learned to stop.
