Jednom rečeno zauvijek rečeno, nakon što lažne vijesti izađu u javnost teško ih je demantirati i reći da su uistinu lažne. Tako dolazi do osebujnog širenja lažnih vijesti (jer medijske kuće dobivaju veliku svotu novaca), što naposljetku dovodi do nepovjerenja građana u medije, što u npr., ratnim sukobima, zdravstvenim pitanjima, ekološkim pitanjima, prirodno izazvanim katastrofama, ima jako veliki utjecaj.

Lažne vijesti mogu uzrokovati ozbiljne zdravstvene posljedice osobito one psihičke prirode. Naime, ako su pojedinci stalno bombardirani lažnim vijestima, javlja se stres kao popratna reakcija. Ljudi postaju žrtve manipulacije te lako upadaju u zamke koje senzacionalistički naslovi nude. Također, lažne vijesti osobito kod poznatih osoba jako utječu na njihov život i normalno funkcioniranje, jer su tada pod pritiskom društva, ali i poznanika te obitelji.
