Yes it is cowardly. Depression etc., whilst they are very serious mental illnesses, can be overcome over time with help and support. Grief however is much more devastating and in the loss of a loved one can be incurable. Suicide is an easy way to end your temporary problems, whilst passing on other, sometimes permanent problems to those who support and love you.
No way can chess be considered to be a sport. A sport involves physical exertion and a person/team to show physical skill and ability. Chess, whilst it takes just as much skill as a sport, is only a mental activity testing a persons mental capacity, anticipation and intelligence, without involving any physical exertion.
