The study they are discussing is completely public: https://news.usc.edu/168987/ They say specifically why the numbers are far below the real number - there is not enough testing happening. You don't need to know the exact mortality rate to know whether there is a problem - just ask if the hospitals are over capacity - yes? then there is a real problem.
