Should there be any virtue in being beautiful, and should there be any shame in being ugly?
Why are the are beautiful looked upon with virtue and the ugly with disdain, when neither of them did anything to earn their state of attractiveness? This seems to defeat the purpose of living in a meritocratic society, how is the virtue bestowed upon a beautiful person different from that bestow ed upon someone born into wealth. Neither earned the virtue bestowed upon them. What can be done about this ?

I think it all comes down to sex. We see a person and then weigh the options, "Would I have sex with that person?"... then it goes even further, "how drunk would I have to be to want to have sex with that person?" Typically, if there is even the slightest chance that we would have sex with the person, then they become more socially acceptable. Of course, this varies from person to person... and most individuals have standards that go above their actual appearance (ex. a five might think that they deserve an eight). We don't have much say in how we look, but we do have a little bit. Being overweight is typically the individual's fault. Looking like a slob is also up to the individual. If you're fit, you can be proud of your body. If you're fat and not because of a medical condition, then yeah... it would make sense to feel somewhat ashamed. Nobody should be depressed over their looks though. If you don't mind how you look, then you don't have to do anything about it. If you hate yourself because of your weight or something else that you can change, then fix it! |
