It's been my experience as an employer that the old adage;- 'once a thief, always a thief'.

Indeed I would go further and state that the thief will interpret leniency as weakness, become greedy and continue with his/her skulduggery on an even greater scale than before being found out.

Just as loyalty and honesty is an intrinsic characteristic of a truthful and sincere person so dishonesty is the congenital mark of the thief.

The only concession I would make is that the nature of the crime must influence the level of punishment and whether or not it warrants dismissal and/or legal proceedings.

For instance, most people will pinch stationery from their employer's office and make unauthorized telephone calls and send personal emails during company tome.

Unless done on an industrial scale such misdemeanors shouldn't call for more than a raised eyebrow.

I believe you're spot on Antrim about thieves . Most companies are also fine with employees asking can they send a personal email / phone call and the same applies to stationary, it's a lot easier to ask instead of just taking and indeed one gets a reputation for being straight up and a decent sort

Yeah Dermot, I always said to my employees, including the tradesmen, if you want something ask for it, and if it's reasonable I'll let you have it for free.

This avoided having to sack some good men when they were caught thieving as such an act was included in their contract of employment as ''gross misconduct''.

Hello A:

So, stealing is ok if you only do a little bit?? No surprise there.. When your morals are malleable, you can justify ANYTHING.. You've probably got a closet full of stolen legal pads..

Hey Bongo, were you in prison for murder, rape, paedophilia, stealing, or all of those things?

I think this little ode sums you up very well;-

Never turn your back on excon who is blacker than black,

because breeding and honesty he does lack,

compassion and kindness he has none,

he'll snuff out your life

and rape your wife,

then bugger your young daughter and poor little son.
