I see no problem with vivisection. It helps us discover cures for diseases, ways of improving human society and discover interesting behaviors of animals. Hell, it might help discover a way to make make-up appear less trampy. :)

I can't think of any reasons other than appeals to emotion to ban vivisection. You can throw animal rights about all you like, but to be quite blunt, I don't give a flying fuck about a lab rat when it could reap rewards for humanity at no apparent cost for us.

Having said that, I had to spend 20 minutes or so today debating in class with a bunch of morons who didn't know what they were talking about. So it would be nice to hear some well formed, intelligent counter arguments.

For cosmetics, probably not.

For medicine, hell yeah. If a dozen or so animals can potentially save thousands or millions of humans that's more than a fair trade.

OH hell no. You either do it or not at all. We have technology now to test it. Most "good" medicines do not test on animals. So again, OH HELL NOOO

What do you mean you either do it or not at all? Can you truly not understand how it would be possible to test on animals for medicines but not for cosmetics?

And though I don't have statistics on hand, even your admission of Most "good" medicines not needing to be tested on animals, even if that were true, most is not all. And again, if testing medicines on a few animals can save thousands or millions of people, it is very worth it.

I find most who are so against this, quickly would change their mind should they, a child or a loved one they know become ill with some life threatening disease. My guess is you'd quickly advocate all types of tests if it were you on the death bed.

The problem with this testing is that animals also feel pain. Yes, animal drug testing hurts. Animals have senses. They can feel pain. And on top of that they cannot do anything to save themselves from pain. Its really distressing that animals are inflicted pain and suffering in such a brutal way. But its better to use them instead of human beings.

Yes! Animal testing advances medicine and scientific understanding! I, for one, want medical science to be more advanced in the future!

Animal testing is horrible. No animal nor human should be tested to see if something could hurt them. In this day in age technology should be able to test whether something is bad. THEY ARE LAZY. Wow. Animals can't say HELP! or this HURTS! Shame!

no animal testing is terrible they are humans too!!! we should treat them the way we want to be treated and did you know back in the old old days people made make up from plants and didn't test on animals and thats how make up started! and instead of animals why don't we just use people that want to sacrifice there life or someone that hates there life like someone emo or suicidal!

Wow, a rat is a human? By Jove, you learn something new every day!

we should treat them the way we want to be treated

An animal that isn't human can't give it's consent or opinion on anything. No-one has the slightest idea of how they want to be treated. I doubt many animals are capable of such thought.

and did you know back in the old old days people made make up from plants and didn't test on animals and thats how make up started!

OK... how is this relevant? I hope you realise that vivisection goes into much more detail than make-up.

instead of animals why don't we just use people that want to sacrifice there life or someone that hates there life like someone emo or suicidal!

1. Humans are animals. Please remember this, it is a pet peeve of mine when people make the mistake of differentiating humans and animals.

2. Using people could actually work. But I doubt there are many people willing to sacrifice themselves for testing. Even so, one of the reasons we use rats and various other creatures, is because we are unsure of the effects drug X would have on a human. It's the reason pretty much any product due for release must be tested first.

3. Not all emo's are willing to sacrifice their life. I would hazard a guess that most of them are just silly middle class narcissists, who hold the belief that the entire world is out to get them, and they are (flicks hair to the side) so misunderstood! I doubt any of them have the chutzpah to sacrifice their own lives.

Animal testing only for surgical reasons and then, ONLY, if the animals are humanely treated beforehand (and everything that that entails--well fed, lots of exercise, lots of loving - must be thoroughly sedated during the operation - and afterwards, the animals must not be allowed to suffer any pain. If they get to recuperate back to their normal selves, they must never again be used as a test animal but must be found a good forever home.

All other animal testing should be banned. Moreover,no animals should be used in warfare.

Vivisection most definitely shouldn't be done for cosmetics, but should we as morally capable people hurt animals for our own good?

STOP ANIMAL TESTING NOW.

Like seriously. Now, we're in 21st century and what's the use of all those so-called modern technology and all? Biotech has been improving its efficiency all these years. Make use of the technologies that you all have developed today!

Have you all seen how rabbits are used for testing mascara products? Disgusting.

[Testing Without Animals]

The main non-animal test employed in cosmetic laboratories today is called the Neutral Red Uptake Assay. This test essentially uses cells in a glass dish. The chemicals in cosmetics are then added to the dishes. A special dye that reacts differently to dead and live cells is added. The researchers then analyze the results with a computer to determine the risk a chemical will have on the cells. These types of tests are known as in vitro, a method which literally translates to "in glass."

Scientists are also frantically searching for new options in non-animal testing. With the pressure from consumers and animal rights activities, along with the necessity of offering a safe product, the need for effective testing without animals is a must.

It's what I read just now.

If we want to stop animal testing, why not ban all use of animals such as fur coats and eating meat? How are these things that many people do every day are different from animal testing? At least animal testing can save lives but meat and fur coats are for luxury.
