Qualitative Research

DEBATE

Qualitative Research Must Be Encouraged Among Undergraduates

29th September to 1st October, 2021

Dr. Anjani Devi M from Batch 2020B

Qualitative research muse b encouraged among undergraduates – PROPOSE

Educational research for long has been limited to only thesis for post graduates in broad specialities and super specialities. In the recent past with new guidelines laid down by NMC, faculty as well as undergraduate are also expected to be involved in research. Various opportunities are being provided to undergraduate students through ICMR to encourage research. What is being observed is that to a large extent research done is mostly quantitative in nature i.e. the “HOW MUCH” is being analysed. But the “WHY HOW,WHAT” is not being analysed at the same rate. There is a need to know these too. Undergraduates must be made aware about qualitative research and encouraged to implement it too.

• It helps them to have a better and deeper understanding of various phenomena, experiences

• This in turn helps them enhance their knowledge and understanding of these phenomena

• They can understand the complexity of human experience in the natural setting. For example why is a particular drug/intervention being accepted or not accepted? A preventive method which is ideal to embrace, maybe seen as a threat or socially unacceptable by some. When an undergraduate goes into the depth of this, it gives him/her a better understanding of that phenomenon.

• Qualitative research will help students understand that different people have different views - All views which may be valid. It broadens the student’s perspectives.

• Students when aware of the various perspectives will be more empathetic towards them.

• If the students are aware of “why” a particular phenomenon is happening, they are likely to come up with strategies to resolve it.

• With AETCOM being introduced, these students can use qualitative research to enhance their communication skills, attitude towards patients (via the data collection methods and tools).

• If qualitative research is encouraged at an early stage ie undergraduate, they are more likely to pursue similar pattern of research even at a later stage too.

Thank you.

Regards,

Dr. Anjani

I, Dr. Anjani from 2020 B batch member of Group Webb “For Oppose” hereby submit my response. I would like to congratulate Dr. Rizwana B Shaik madam on being selected as group leader.

The challenges of E-Learning could be broadly categorised into those faced by the students, the faculty and institution.

Potential challenges for students:

• Familiarity of learning in a digital environment

• Ability to adapt to the change from traditional teaching platforms to digital platform

• Not all students are adept at handling e-learning platforms

• Access to internet – bandwidth and connectivity issues

• Availability of infrastructure

• Learning styles of students varies from one to another

• Limited scope to personalise the teaching learning methods especially for large group teaching

• Ability to identify reliable and authentic sources of information

• Internal motivation and commitment

Potential challenges for faculty:

• Hesitation to accept and implement unfamiliar practices

• Lack of skills/awareness

• Availability of resources such as equipment, space and financial support for the above

• Availability of a sound broadband network that provides internet constantly and at a good speed

• Availability of technical support

• It is challenging to identify students who require more attention

• Interaction, especially with a large group is challenging

• Lack of face to face interaction

• Planning and commitment is required for the teaching learning sessions

• Possibility of malpractices for assignments

• Support from institution/ administration

Potential challenges for administration

• Provision of required resources

• Financial requirement for infrastructure, technical support, software and internet access.

• Conducting training /sensitisation programmes for faculty and students
