Debate is useful in the sense that it helps introduce a topic to a listener. However, its limited time frame means that the scope of the arguments provided by both sides are cursory at best and not condusive to understanding of an issue.

Furthermore, in debate, citing references for facts is something that is rare compared to academic journals which have pages of reference material (think works cited). It is simply much more difficult to fact check a debate versus academic journals.
