Teachers can give out detentions for the most retarded reasons, and some teachers are just privilege-abusing dicks. No matter what you did, the detention still goes onto your permanent record. When you try to get into a good university, all they'll look at is how many detentions you've gotten, and won't even bother checking the reason for why you were sentenced to it.
