Civilized societies should legalise assisted suicide

There have been several prominent cases of British ciitizens travelling to clinics in Switzerland to end their lives via legalised assisted suicide. We should reconsider our opposition to euthanasea. We should acknowledge that there are some medical situations where assisted suicide is the most human solution. But which situations you ask?

There has been a fairly recent landmark decision in Australia to allow a quadriplegic man to refuse to be fed via feeding tube. This was important, because the man had fully functioning brain capacity, and was able to clearly express his wishes. He wanted the right to kill himself, however he lacked the ability to do so. The only way he and his nursing staff could think of getting around the laws was for him to refuse food, to literally starve himself to death.

They took it through the courts, specifically so the none of the nursing staff would be criminally charged, and so they could have a solid legal stance to base future cases on.

There was recently 2 cases in Britain.

I can't remember the specifics but 2 mothers euthanised their kids, one was given a prison sentence and the other was not. There were a lot of variables and I think the decision was appropriate to sentence the mother in accordance to the law (not my personal opinion however) but it did bring up a lot of the contraversy surrounding assisted suicide.

I do think your stance that 'civilised' societies is a bit judgemental. Every case like this should be taken into account. People should always go through court (medical) and then should be given the go ahead. It should take upto 4 weeks max too. lol. That's not happening in Britain though...

Every step that's taken towards what's fair for the person who can't act for him/herself is a good one. I don't advocate this happening on a willynilly basis, I agree with you that every case should be brought before the courts. Every case should be fully documented to ensure that there is full consent.

As far as I'm concerned, all suicide is fine.

To me, if someone wants to die we have no right to tell them otherwise.

As individuals, what we decide for our body is our choice.

And if someone needs some euthanasia, go ahead.

you know some people just dont have the will to live everything depresses them, they just arent happy and cant find things to make them happy. its their body let them do with it as they please

Side: Suicide should be legal

If a patient is suffering intense pain and no cure is in sight, the patient should have the right to die with dignity.
