How to make striped and spotted animals

Did you know that you can make striped and spotted animals just by having them mate while looking at striped and spotted things?

Genesis 30:25-43 tells us that Laban took all of Jacobs striped and spotted animals, leaving Jacob with only plain ones.   That made Jacob sad :'(  He wanted fancy shmansy animals too, so he cut stripes and spots into the bark of tree branches and made sure his animals could see them when they were bumpin' uglies.  His genius plan worked and all of his plain colored animals gave birth to striped and spotted babies.  He repeated the process over and over and had lots of fancy shmancy animals all for himself. Yay Jacob!

Moral of the story: Don't look at anything plaid while bumpin' uglies or your kid will come out plaid.

Generally nuttier than peanut butter.

Although to be fair, some species do show shades of something similar; the field of epigenetics is all about looking into traits that are not passed directly via genes, but rather due to certain genes being turned 'off' or 'on' in response to environmental conditions. Some animals do express this in their coat and tend towards mimicking their environment in that regard. However, none of these species that I know of are domesticated, and none of it happens in response to patterns carved in a few trees. I wonder if observation of this type of thing in some animals was the inspiration for this particular myth?
