Is Public Humiliation An Acceptable Form of Punishment?

Is it okay to Publicly Humiliate criminals? What about a parent publicly humiliating their child as punishment?

As an optional, alternate punishment, yes. But I don't think it should be required. The kind of thing where you can reduce or eliminate a fine for, say, littering by spending time cleaning up trash in a public place with a sign around your neck that labels you a litterbug. Or just pay the fine in full. I like the idea of people publicly owning up to their actions and possibly directly working to counter them, instead of paying the government or serving time by way of compensation.

It depends on the situation. For terrorists, murderers, and rapists, yes.

Well when they're punnished publicly, it's normally because of something horrific. If not then no.

It depends on what you mean on public humiliation. If it is doing community service in front of people wearing a shirt telling what you did then it is okay. But if is the opposite of that then it is not okay.

Side: Not At All

Humiliating people is not the answer to anything... It's a very crude and medieval act (especially when it comes to punishment) and can be very detrimental to the wrong-doer.

It's working alright for Singapore. That country is beautiful.

And what's to say our refined and civilized techniques are any better? A criminal does something bad and they have to pay the government for it? Or be locked up with a bunch of other criminals (also very detrimental)? Do these really speak to some higher moral standard than public service while publicly owning up to a crime?

humiliation is a vindictive act. it does nothing to prevent the act from being committed again, and in some cases would lead to an escalation of anti social behaviors. being purposely degraded by either parents, or a judge only leads to a lack of respect for the authority figure since all they are doing is causing them to be shamed.

Side: Not At All

Public humiliation just lends animosity to the person who gives the proclamation to the public humiliation.
