Religion is... To use Christianity as an example (I dont mean to offened anyone), was created by the Roman's as a way of controling people.

If you have 200 thousand supersitious people roiting accross the empire what do you do. You exploit their weakness, their naivity in beliving anything. Then you do some fucking research, and plot your own religion around historical event's. Such as the birth of Jesus, he was a very, very religious man. But he was still human. So all they needed to do was change the facts, and because there was no internet of research sites back then, no one could contradict the theory and so thousands of people start obaying law's.
