My idea was that, if the universe is dependent on life to exist (which quantum mechanics suggests it is), then it would be reasonable to rule out the possibility that life (in some form) predates the known universe.
By "life" one can only assume you mean consciousness, one would be incredibly stupid to jump to the conclusion that consciousness was the first thing to exist simply because we theoretically can affect reality by "observing" it (termed loosely) based on some poorly understood phenomena we've experienced. I know you aren't jumping to this conclusion, but you seem to be seriously considering it, and upon seriously (although briefly) considering I have concluded that it's fucking dumb as shit. It is absolutely impossible because consciousness requires pre-existent components to exist (sensory inputs, some type of interconnected structure etc.) whereas whatever forms the basis for reality must lack that necessity.
compatible with your own belief that the universe is a simulation
You believe in the holographic hypothesis, whereas I don't have beliefs. Besides, there is a difference between Ultimate Reality itself and the nature of a mere simulation within that reality. You used the words ULTIMATE NATURE OF REALITY you stupid fucking prick. That means consciousness would have to be the basis for reality itself and predate everything. If you want to talk about a simulation obviously beings could exist outside it and before it and thus life would predate our "reality". But that has nothing to do with what the "ultimate nature of reality" is in an "ultimate" sense. The answer to your question is obvious granted we are in a simulation and you assume the words "ultimate reality" to mean "specific simulation of a reality within reality" but the actual basis of reality cannot be predated by conscious because that is retarded.
