Atheists: What do you think of Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad and other religious figures?

Do they give wise teachings?

Are they good men?

Do you think they deserve to have religions in their name?

Tell me what you think of those people who've influenced religion and history, even now.

Regarding Jesus, although I feel his teachings are wise, for me, an atheist, it is hard to accept that he called himself a god.

Even though Christians are ok with this concept, for me, a person who doesn't believe that gods exist, for a man to call himself a god is very controversial. If gods do not exist, then this man lied and deceived people by claiming to be God.

Buddha never claimed to be a god, in fact, he denied it when asked if he was by a follower. He never wanted to become a god, he only wanted enlightenment through wisdom and meditation.

And Muhammad?

He was a warlord, many consider him a pedophile who married a 9 or 10 year old girl, Aisha, one of his many wives.

If he did not receive holy words from an angel, then he must have made it up, and having read parts of the Koran, I can only say it is extremely violent and hateful to people to other religions, including atheists.

"It is useless to argue about religion, because it is to discuss what gives meaning to someone else's life". (Mario Sergio Cortella, Brazilian philosopher).

Excellent debate idea!

Jesus: I mean, what is there to say? Peasant who collected a decent following before being crucified.

Buddha (did you mean Siddhartha Gutama?): Probably the least horrific of the bunch, but still evil. He has actually got people to believe that they'll come back in another life. This is obviously a threat to logic.

Muhammad: Same as what I said about Jesus.

Yes, Siddhartha Gautama.

Yes, he did still do the reincarnation thing...

I think the most wicked bit of reincarnation is being able to blame people born into unlucky circumstances as being bad people.

Like, if you are born poor, it's because in a previous life you were corrupt and rich, when in reality you were simply born poor.

Shakyamuni Buddha told every one of his followers: "Believe nothing. No matter where you read it, no matter who has said it. Not even if said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.
