Castrating serious sex offenders
Many issues come to light when it comes to the issues of castrating serious sex offenders. One must take into account the evidence, its constitutionality, and the moral implications behind castration.

I would support castration of repeat sex offenders; in fact, I would support castration of first-time offenders with the proviso that there is absolutely no doubt whatever that the person charged is, indeed, the person who committed the sex crime. If the person charged is found guilty in a court of law still claims his innocence, he must remain in custody until such time as he has been able to prove his innocence (added evidence--whatever) or agrees to undergo castration. The decision would be his. Side: Should be castrated

This issue needs serious qualification before a serious debate can take place. As Blacksheep noted, the sex offender registry has major flaws. However, if we define sex offender as a repeat offender who has directly harmed more than one person by unwanted sexual exploitation (or even consensual if the victim is under say, 12..14?), many would agree to castration. Possibly most. But the current, emotionally driven, knee jerk labeling of sex offenders dilutes the need for positive preventative action, because too many minor infractions are classed with the serious child molesters and serial rapists. First you really need to define serious sex offender. The sex offender registry s currently a very sick joke. I could maybe see it in terms of serious second offenders where the evidence is unequivocal, if I could be convinced it would make a significant difference. Side: Should not be castrated

Well, if those in charge of castrating make as many mistakes as those who put the wrong people away in our prisons and even put them on death row, I wouldn't support it. To think of even one man having that happen who wasn't dangerous to children but was falsely accused or just put in prison by incompetent lawyers or overly zealous prosecutors who care more about winning than justice. I know for a fact this kind of unjust "justice" has happened entirely too much with people who don't have much money, people of color, gays and anyone charged with a sex offense. The sex offender laws are one of the worst over-reactions to a very small number of heinous crimes involving children that this country has ever seen. Drama-driven media, esp.FOX, unscrupulous politicians and corporations that benefit from making our prisons more crowded than Russia and China put together because they profit in some way, i.e. private prisons, surveillance companies, etc. No, we have too much already that rouses up the hate and mob mentality in this country. Sometimes less is more, quality's better than quantity...when it comes to the sex offender laws, we have bloated registries and way too many of the wrong people on there. If you are someone who does care about justice, educate yourself and help us in this David-Goliath fight Catching and persecuting people who don't deserve it doesn't help protect our children from those who do. http://www.csom.org/pubs/mythsfacts.html http://ilvoices.com/media/ http://www.reformsexoffenderlaws.org/ Read Jim and Nancy Petro's book "False Justice" and Richard Wrights' "Sex Offender Laws: Failed Policies, New Directions"and Sean Penn's "Witch hunt" http://www.youtube.com/ Side: Should not be castrated
