What makes hip-hop/rap good enough to be considered music. Or is it not?

I notice heavy negative criticism on this musical genre and I would like to know why rap has not been taken seriously.... or why it should not be taken seriously. Perhaps it is a matter of taste but I dont know.

I mean, yeah, it has rhythm, melody, it's music by definition.

What something is, isn't a matter of taste, like you can't be "that cloud in the sky pisses me off! That's not a cloud!"

Some rap is actually great by any measure of creativity. It's the new commercialized "me me me, money money money" bullshit you hear on the radio that sucks.

In my opinion rapping a pencil against a desk is music, so of course hip-hop/rap make the cut.

I understand where the criticism is coming from, though, and why. A lot of rap albums and live performances are essentially one uneducated thug talking (as opposed to singing or even flowing) about how awesome he is, how rich he is, how many bitches he gets, and how he fucks people up. All of this while some actually talented producer throws down a beat that he made (not the rap artist) and a bunch of the rap artists friends pace around the studio/stage intermittently saying things like "YEA!!" and "WESTSYDE!!" and "YAAAYOOOOOO!!!!" and "THUG FO LIFE MOTHAFUCKA!!"

Compared to... well... most other genres of music, this kind of rap requires next to no musical skill or talent. You don't need a good voice, creative lyrics, or musical knowledge. It's kinda like pop, now that I mention it.

All of this amounts to, in my opinion, bad music, not music so bad it shouldn't be considered music.

But at the end of the day, there's no arguing taste. Some people actually like listening to a dumb thug talk about how many bitches hes fucked. I don't know why, but who am I to say they shouldn't?

My brother gave me some reason why technically hip hop isn't music, but I forgot it. I say anything with rythym/tempo and sound can be music. A co-worker told me just last week that most rappers don't know how to read / write music sheets and don't understand music theory so they aren't real musicians. I simply replied, your favorite metal bands can't do any of that shit either...so that's the end of that argument.

Hasty generalization of all metal bands. The guitar especailly in those bands is extremely intricate. Clearly most members of metal bands must have some knowledge of music. Perhaps the singers dont, but at least one person definately will or the band would fail.

OK, there's a few signed metal bands that do. I would say about 5% of them or something like that. And I don't deny that metal band guitarists are really good guitarists. They are. I think that some of the best guitarists in the world play in metal bands. But they largely learned to play by experimentation, just like I did. Of course there's some fundamentals to learn first, like how to play power chords, open chords etc. But once they have those down and are somewhat familiar with what notes correspond to the strings, they can learn to play anything without reading or writing music.

I would have to disagree that rappers dont read or write.. some of their best work are forged with pen and paper. anyone can be a rapper.. if you include the untrained. that would depend on the individual. you have to understand that the metal era are probably developed decades ago.. For example, Metalica.. Most of them do not have the luxury to attend music school so most have to play by ear. More recent metal bands probably have better formal education. And probably most can even play the instrument and sing better than a more educated band...

I'm a HUGE fan of that style of East Coast hip hop, and I do agree that most mainstream "hip hop" isn't hip hop at all. But there are still some mainstream artists that fit the bill: Common, Nas, Taleb Kwali, Jadakiss, Styles P, Trae The Truth (sometimes), Kanye West (sometimes), Lupe Fiasco, Eminem, Royce Da 5'9", etc. I don't like all of those artists, but I still gotta give em credit for being true hip-hoppers, if only some of the time. You just don't hear a lot of real hip-hop on the radio, but it's definitely circulating in the mainstream.

True.. Technique is all about the truth and lyricism.. but here is the catch, spitting realness will not always keep you hooked to listen over and over again. the music is admirable enough to keep you inspired or motivated but lack the energy or hype to keep you entertained. the secret of mainstream music is they make it sound good but lack the identity. good but no soul.. Underground musician can write really well but no so much of a recording artist.

First if all thank you all for stopping by... It is my first created debate and I appreciate all the opinions I get.. Hip-hop is an extremely artistic and deep genre but what kept me hooked was the immediate impression I got from it. First of, the beat.. I've heard typical violin, drums, guitars but hip-hop beats embodies everything.. The music is so fast in pace, the beats are made to make you move! rap beats are so distinctive that any instrument you add in it, you know its hiphop. being the young listener i was, i didint know what makes talking fast so special..it was hard to describe. the rhyming was in great synchronization with the music, and there is this 'swagger' in the artist's voice. it takes great skill and very difficult to fake. the flow. and finally the lyrcis... some of the best lyrics can only be made with rap. understand the situation within the african american community in some areas.. most had to rap to break out of poverty or gang violence.

I dont like most modern rap there's not a lot of new innovative stuff coming through it's as if they've found a template and are sticking to it which is sad because it used to be a constantly changing and evolving type of music and I love the stuff from the 70's through the 90's.

I personally don't like that genre, but that's what it is, a different type of music. Auditory continuous notes produced by instruments or cyber-instruments with some sort of meaning behind it. But that leaves out songs without music. So.... someone come up with a better one.

-Shrug- Doesn't mean I won't continue to playfully insult my friends who listen to rap. ;)

I appreciate rap for what it can do- add diversity to sonic soundscapes, let socially disadvantaged have a say in life, provide an outlet to new forms of songwriting (more rhyme and emphasis on the beats aka beatboxing)

That being said, not all rappers are the same, but the styles employed by artists who are mainstream are considered all there is to rap (uneducated chain-smoking thugs and wankstas wearing patterned hoodies hungry for attention and appealing to the lowest common denominator to make a profit). This is especially hard in making other people appreciate rap, especially if they have been growing up to rock and classical.

Side: Music

The bold and brazen lyrics make Hip-Hop a good form of music.

Side: Music

Its poetry to me. I dont really call talking into a mic with a fabricated beat in the background "music" but thats just me. To me music is a little more complicated. More intricate and audibly pleasing.

Nicely put.. But the true intention of music is to entertain.. As long as it does, then it could only be music. Noise arranged in a way it makes melody. Maybe you would refer intricate with Mozart or classical music.??? however it could not be universally accepted to sound good to everyone..

Side: Music

Music doesn't have to be complex for it to be deemed music. The blues (which is really simple) is what Jazz, Rock, Hip-Hop and most modern music is based off of today.

There's only one person who does hip-hop/rap that I'll listen to, and that's Eminem... He's the only rapper (in my opinion) who makes up for the musical deficit of this genre by his ability to be clever, witty, satirical and from the heart in his lyrics... Other than that, rap and hip-hop sucks and the music industry should 'Just Lose It':)

Eminem Ear Candy:)
