The idea of how the interest group is deemed useful or productive creates conflict. America is known as the "melting pot", a place were hundreds of different cultures life and thrive together. Having said that, because of people's different backgrounds, there will always be a debate in what is deemed useful and important. Interest groups are unable to satisfy all nationalities especially if they do not have a substantial amount of donations. In America it's simple, if you have money you can make a significant difference, more so than those who are financially lacking.

I agree that there are a handful of interest groups today that would be considered beneficial to society. However, to say that they are "very useful" is a slight overstatement. For the American people to depend on a group that believes in a common good and is able to receive a populous vote for such beliefs is a figment of the imagination. A conflict of interest erupts on any given topic because of people differing beliefs, influences, and values held. For those fortunate to voice their opinion , the majority of those people wont actually be the poor or middle class. Such groups that do make changes have three similar things in common, money, using indirect/direct tactics, and having the luxury of friends in positions of power.

Interest groups revolve around three basic principles, money, power, and resources. Favoring those with more time and money to contribute rather than the interest of the poor. Because of such selfish motives, interest groups have lacked on representing the common good of their members. I see interest groups today falling under the category of the elite theory; few groups who are mostly wealthy receiving all the power. This theory created a very narrow minded and greedy spectrum of members. An example would be the NBWA, this interest group is responsible for the representation of distributors of beer. Now we all know that nutritionist and doctors advise against the consumption of alcohol, yet they’re interest groups defending against such beliefs. The NBWA believes it is providing “economic, commercial, and regulation value” which will intern create some type of positive impact on Americans. NBWA strongly advising that such positive contributions to society should mask their push for the consumption of beer, which causes 31% of all traffic fatalities (according Century Council) .

donationsunesroups are without a doubt detrimental to a democratic society. Since the birth years of America, political theorists such as James Madison have warned against the formation of factions or interest groups. As stated in Federalist 10 concerning factions, the “instability, injustice, and confusion introduced” could lead to the “heaviest misfortunes” for our democracy. Despite warning by early leaders, America has become oblivious and are currently suffering the consequences through topics such as gun control. Since 1871, the NRA has developed into a superpower interest group. Affecting congressional policies on the topic of gun control policies, especially in the past month. The NRA is at a stand still with Congress, standing firmly on their belief against gun-control assault weapon ban. This interest group is no longer taking into consideration the opinions of their members, when 73% of their members were actually for bans proposed by Congress. The NRA is oblivious to any proposition that would help keep Americans safe, remaining in opposition towards any acts that would cause them to lose “donations”.

The monster loathes for the interaction he is incapable of having with humans. When visiting the cottage, the monster gratifies the old man stating, "your present humanity assures me of success with those friends whom I am on the point of meeting (15. 104). He continuously hungers to be accepted among the human race. After the disastrous mishap between the De Lacey family, "for the first time the feelings of revenge and hatred filled my [the monster] bosom (15.106)". The sympathy one might feel towards the monster and his cursed life. The only blasphemy given should be towards the lack of responsibility taken by his creature.

Victor, Elizabeth’s cousin, becomes thrusted into a dystopia due to misfortune events. He was completely unaware of the extenuating circumstances, which when revealed would “chill your frame with horror” (22,144). Victor is oblivious to the detrimental effects his action or inactions have caused. By no means is the entanglement of disastrous circumstances deserving to poor Victor. He will not only receive multiple “dire blows” (6.67) from the loss of William, Justine, and Henry, but the monster will take Elizabeth’s life. By no means is Victor deserving in anyway of becoming condemned to a painful and sorrowful life. Later, Victor comes his senses that he is causing others pain,“My poor cousin, how much you must have suffered!” (22.143). However, Victor’s responsibility to destroy his creation comes at a cost, the loss of , William, Justin, Henry, Victor’s father, and even Elizabeth. “Victor could never have imagined that his thirst for knowledge would end with “misery..dwelling in my [Victor] heart,” (21.142). For this reason, I sympathize on a higher level for Dr. Frankenstein.

I agree. The monster condones himself for being such a destructive creation, asking out loud why he was created "cursed, cursed creator! Why do I live?" (104). The monster recognized the greed of knowledge and how Victor has abused such power. Victor has created a creature unaware of it's complications, and left it to fend for itself. For such reason, the dangers of scientific advancements is an excellent theme in chapter 17.

I agree with the tone toward the monster is that of sympathy. However, one must also use the example of his confrontation with the old man. Here the monster is thanking the old man for his generosity, and in return the monster receives being "struck violently with a stick" (104). Here the monster does not choose to fight back but is overcome with emotional grievances, " my heart sunk with in me as with bitter sickness" (104).

Personal Responsibility

The creature has taken it as a personal responsibility to educate himself with that of the human ways. Seeing that was robbed of a formal education due to his caretaker, Victor, he must fill this emptiness, thus taking responsibility for his education. The monster learned from both the De Lacey family and books such as “Paradise Lost, a volume of Plutarch’s Live, and the Sorrow of Werter.” (98) Reading engrossed his mind and thirst for knowledge, cherishing feelings “that sometimes raised me {the monster} to ecstasy.” (98). He began to compare himself to that of the characters, treasuring more emotional feelings and enlarging his intellectual capacity, “Paradise Lost excited different and far deeper emotions.” (99).

I agree. In Victor's pursuit of knowledge with how the human anatomy and the study of life and death, he was oblivious with what detrimental effects could conspire. Victor's selflessness lack of accountability for his actions as caused him self-inflicted grief. Not once does Victor take into consideration how the monster will feel. The monster explains how he has been overcome with "agony " (93), that the abandonment that was inflicted upon him has cause nothing but sorrow and grief.
