Clearly you need to make sure that your social media/network accounts are up to date, and show your professionalism not only your party pictures, however if this is the case I don't see why you cant use social media to approach companies and apply for new jobs. I agree that as long as you use social media and the internet, in general, responsibly and or take responsibility for what you post why not use social media is such a way. If an organization would want to find your Facebook profile (for instance), they can find ways to do so whether you send them a message via the network or not.
