War is the ultimate way to decide an argument in your favor.
It is the tool of those who are unable to succeed in diplomacy for whatever reason.
Many wars are fought because oppressed people lack the ability to protect and defend their own position and must be assisted by those who have the power to take down an oppressive regime.
Other wars are fought for territory and power within a region.
Still there are other conflicts waged because intolerance toward religious belief compels people to arms rather than being willing to 'live and let live'.
While we all wish that we could live in peace, we have yet to developer a civilization that can truly overlook the offenses that are deliberately caused by another without becoming the doormat of the world's dictators.
War is sometimes the ONLY way to solve a conflict but should never be the first option.
