Spanking, licks, etc shoud be re-established in the school systems.

Pain always worked for me - nothing else would have. Many will say that it teaches children that violence is wrong, thus leading to violence later in life. What do they know? Spanking was common in the previous generations, and most of them turned out alright. Yet, now people are saying that it is wrong - this new, non-spank generation doesn't seem to be off to the best of starts. Side: Descipline at its best
It's good discipline. Go to countries where children are better. Ask them if they get beaten all of the time. They'll say no. Ask them if they did things that western kids do, if they'd get beaten, they'd say yes. It's not just the action that's good for discipline... but the threat of it is enough. I teach a preschool class, and I can't imagine spanking or smacking a kid. It shows a lack of respect for the child as a person and it teaches that physical responses are appropriate in some circumstances. Children are not rational enough to understand the difference between physical aggression when they're angry and physical aggression when you're punishing them. If you can't control a child without bringing them pain, there's a definite problem. Side: Unnecesssary pain

Spanking a child only teaches it that this is appropriate behavior when you are angry with someone for their actions. Not... it teaches them they'll get the shit beaten out of them if they cross the line. And by shit beaten out of them I mean spanked. Side: Descipline at its best

Where is the line set, it is a subject that is too open to exploitation nobody should ever be given the right to hurt another person. It does definitely teach them what you have mentioned but that is fear. The child will not stop its negative behavior it will only find ways around being caught. It will grow up with the knowledge planted in its brain that it is OK to be violent when you deem it necessary and a contempt for authority. Side: Unnecesssary pain
I am not against reasonable corporate punishment. Sometimes, a smack on the butt is the only thing a child will respond to. It should be made clear to the child that if they do x, they get a spanking, and once the promise has been made, it should be carried out. I may feel differently when I actually have a kid but this is how I feel now. However, all too often, corporal punishment is used because the adult is angry and they want an outlet for their frustration, and then I think it becomes abuse. This is why I would never trust anyone else to hit my hypothetical kid, especially when I wasn't around to see that it was in the right situation and not serious enough to do any damage.
