Change of Priorities for Government

Because the local governments of smaller towns and cities are easily overwhelmed, especially if they happen to be a popular tourist destination, or are poised to become one, they may start focusing on the potential influx of money brought in by tourists’ dollars, sometimes at the cost of focusing on local issues. This may be especially true if a community is not yet a destination, but has some type of event or landmark it can use to bring in revenue. They may decide to focus attention and resources on this potential cash flow rather than the local population and its issues.

Advantage: Bring money to your city, adds jobs that might not exist otherwise.

Disadvantage: At the begining of a pandemic, they possibly bring a virus to your area.

One of the many benefits of tourism is that it significantly helps boost our economy. Tourism alone earns $23.6 billion per year in Singapore. Tourism also helps make thousands of job opportunities for jobs such as tour guide or travel agencies, ensuring that more people are employed.

Shin(9) Disputed
1 point

In what way does tourism help to boost the economy? Please give some examples on what the tourists to help boost our economy.

1 point

The advantage of tourism is that it helps to boost the economy. Tourism acts as a commercial activity that creates demand and growth for many more industries. It not only contributes towards more economic activities but also generates more employment, revenues and play a significant role in development. For example, Singapore relies on tourism for its economy and in 2017 accounted for 4.1% with a direct contribution of $17.7 billion. and the percentage of tourism's contribution to Singapore's GDP is projected to rise to 4.4% in 2028. Therefore tourism is an advantage.

Marilynn(11) Disputed

What if something (e.g. a virus like Covid-19) causes people to be unable to travel? This will prevent people from travelling and the economy will drop. Will it still be as useful towards the economy? Moreover, people during this hard times might lose their jobs so the rate of employment will drop. This will also cause the 4.1% contribution to be rendered useless at times like these

evzen_kkln(9) Clarified

good format and good argument and rheostatical question. Very logical. Nubbad

Silly_Shiya(6) Clarified
1 point

Safety measures could be taken and tourism would not be shut down completely since it's still needed for important business trips and such. These 'things' that cause people to be unable to travel would only be temporary and even if we are unable to travel for a long period of time, when the period is over, there will likely be more people wanting to travel after not being able to do so in a while. This would boost the economy even more than before.

1 point

Disadvantage:Due to tourism, there may be overcrowding, congestion on roads and places and traffic jams, which would be a big hassle for people to carry out their work. For instance, when tourists visit the 'Eiffel Tower', there may be blockades and barricades by the local police or by the tourists organisation to prevent overcrowding so that they can tour the places without any problems. Unfortunately, this might be a big hassle for locals and residents as more time is wasted so they take a longer time to carry out their work. Drivers may also have to take a different route to reach their destination, which is a waste of fuel, energy and time. Hence, tourism is a big problem as it causes overcrowding, congestion on roads, places and traffic jams.

Adwaith(7) Clarified

disadvantage of tourism.

Tourism is bad. It destroys the natural habitats of the animals living in the wild in the country. As more tourists visit the country and the tourism industry in the country profits, more accommodations such as hotels, chalets need to be built so that these tourists have places to stay in during their trip. The government will built such accommodations based off lands that belonged to the homes of the wild animals. As the tourism industry gets better, more of these habitats will be destroyed. Thus, tourism is bad as it destroys the natural habitats of the wild animals.

1 point

Advantages: Tourism helps with the growth of a country's economy, and hence can help a country develop well. For example, with the increased economy from the profit of tourism from the increased number of jobs, the revenue collected can be used to help fund research for a vaccine or cure, budget for the construction of more facilities such as medical centres or transportation vehicles which can then help the population flourish.

Disadvantages: The jobs that come along with tourism are not a reliable source of income for those working in the industry as they are either poorly paid or based on certain periods of the year. Damage is also done to the environment with the construction of pavements and hotels.

1 point

Disadvantages

Tourism has a disadvantage as the country may be too over reliant on economic growth instead of other aspects. For example Singapore relies heavily on the tourism industries so most of the money is directed to tourism such as creating new attractions once in a while to attract tourist. But on the downside for example with covid-19, the economic growth will drop as there is lack of tourist due to the virus. With the lack of tourist, some jobs will be lost such as the entertainment industries, retail industries and food and beverage industries. Hence, tourism may have a disadvantage.

evzen_kkln(9) Clarified

Tourism is a good thing as it allows more business opportunities and provides more jobs. With more tourists visiting the country, more tourist attractions will receive more business and thus earn more income. This will also provide more jobs for people living in the country. For example, if more tourist come to our country and visit the Botanic Gardens, more people will need to pay the Botanic Gardens entry fee. With more visitors, more employees are needed at the Botanic Gardens to help out and run the local attraction. Hence, more job opportunities and business opportunities are provided. Thus, tourism is a good thing.

evzen_kkln(9) Clarified

1 point

Tourism provides more job options for those that are unemployed. Tourism accounts for 1 in 10 jobs worldwide and delivered 1 in 5 of all new jobs created in 2017. This shows that tourism allows them to have much more job opportunities, allowing more people to have a chance to support themselves and their families financially. Hence, tourism provides more people with a chance to get employed.

1 point

A very huge downside of tourism is that it causes a bad impact on the ecosystem. For example, to promote tourism at bird parks or zoos, animals are taken from their families and their natural habitats. When kept in an environment without its family, or a habitat that is too small, the animal can become aggressive or depressed. Moreover, habitats are sometimes destroyed to make space for tourist attractions to be made. The destruction of these huge areas of land for tourist attractions would have a bad impact on the ecosystem. Hence tourist attractions are not good as they cause the damage of our ecosystem.

Marilynn(11) Disputed
1 point

but what if these animals are well trained and do not get aggressive or depressed or enjoy the attention they are getting?

1 point

advantage: New facilities will be created for the tourists, which will also benefit the locals. When tourist come over to countries for a holiday, they would want to travel around the country more conveniently, so the government would have build more roads for the tourists. This also benefit the locals as they also would be able to use the roads. This would be convenient for both the tourist and locals. The government might also build more malls, this would be convenient the locals who want to buy daily necessities. Therefore, I think that tourism is good because it can be convenient for both the locals and tourist.

How do tourists help to prevent loss of traditions? Pls use the peel format.

Shin(9) Disputed

How are local traditions and customs are kept alive? Is there anything example of what the tourists do? Write in PEEL format

1 point

Tourism is good as more locals can get jobs. As more tourists arrives, the country has to keep up with its standards and satisfy the tourist's needs, leading to more jobs needed to sustain the requirements of tourists. When more jobs are created, it helps improve the economy and also allows more people to have jobs and get payed. So not only does the tourists have more places to visit, it also benefits the locals.

1 point

One of the disadvantages of tourism is that it causes damage to the natural environment. When tourists arrive in Singapore, they usually travel here by planes, cars and ships. That causes air, water and land pollution. As the exhaust from the planes and cars pollute the air, the ships pollute the water when they wash out their tanks or dump their bilge water and the tourists cause land pollution when they litter. There is also soil pollution as they will clear a lot of land to build hotels for the tourists to stay in. That is why i think that tourism causes damage to the natural environment.

How does tourism help to boost the country’s economy. Doesn’t the government have to use money to build facilities for the tourists too? Please elaborate using PEEL format on what way the tourists help to boost the country’s economy and give some examples

1 point

Tourism is good for us as it provides more opportunities for one to learn, enjoy and discover. An example of a cultural tourist attraction in Singapore would be Chinatown. One can discover the scents of traditional food amid the clamor of street markets there and understand history and local Chinese culture. One can also visit the Chinatown heritage centre where it recreates the original interiors of the 1950s, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of Chinatown's early residents. Thus tourism is advantageous.

It's because it is better to experience something first hand than to just see a picture of it from the textbook and I don't think one can smell the textbook for the scent of the place.

35% is quite a lot, if tourism suddenly just stopped the amount of money that Singapore makes would decrease by that amount and there would be lesser money to invest on other things to build the economy and hence would also be harder to earn back the 35%

Disadvantage of tourism:

Tourism is bad and has its drawback as many countries rely on tourism for the major source of income, and for creating jobs for the local communities. However, being too reliant on tourism has its disadvantage. The reason why it has a disadvantage is because any sudden drop in tourist arrivals may affect the economy of the country, and many people would suffer from job losses. Some examples for the significant dip in tourists arrival may be due to a virus outbreak, a war happening or even a natural disaster. These are situations and happenings that we cannot control over, and you might never know when it would come. Unsafe situations like this causes lesser tourists to come and visit the country, and make a huge impact on the economy. Thus, being too reliant on tourism has its drawback.

1 point

tourism damages our landscape. Tourism would cause heavy traffic in the region which cause problems such as global warming and climate change. Tourism contributes to more than 5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, with transportation accounting 90 percent of this. It would also put an enormous stress on local land use, which would lead to soil erosion, increased pollution and habitat loss. These effects would gradually destroy the environmental resources.

Marilynn(11) Disputed

Tourists gather at tourists attractions some attractions are also workplaces for the citizens. Heavy traffic does happen daily. However tourists also contribute to the heavy traffic as there are more people in an area/road which makes it more congested.

[ p ] tourism helps to build the economy. [ e ] firstly, tourism boosts local employment for sectors like the hotel industry, transportation companies and air travel etc. [ e ] since there are more tourists coming in and out of the country, more jobs are created in order to help maintain these services. these industries also depend on tourists to generate revenue. moreover, international tourism accounted for 4.1% of singapore's national GDP in 2017, with a direct contribution of $17.7 billion, which is still growing by the day.
