No, in fact it sounds like your brother is a man of fine taste, which makes him more likely to be intelligent.

Seriously, can people stop posting the most inane shit for a debate. If you don't have anything interesting to say, don't fucking say anything.

Go learn how to masturbate or something, and let people who have something to say talk.

Actually, I don't see this as inane shit for a debate. Sure, Sonicfreak81's way if getting it out there is not the norm but this brings up an interesting discussion.

for one, this debate is not insane, and it is interesting. if its not, then tell me why YOU were on this debate?anyway, no one starts any trouble on my debates, and there is no need to use such profanity in the way u r using it. u are acting immature for acting that way and i am trying to act more mature than the likes of you, this is why i did not automatically snap on u.now, if YOU dont have anything vital or valuable to say on my page about the topic stated, then just leave. how about picking on someone your own size besides messing with a 12 year old next time.

for one, this debate is not insane

He said inane, not insane, those words have two completely different meanings.

As for the rest of your rant, no need to get so angry... everyone is entitled to their opinion. Not everyone knows you're 12... I didn't?

Fair play to him sounds like he's got good taste in music and rocks out, give his music a chance most of it is timeless and most of the bands you mentioned that he listens to that are still alive are still playing

Much modern music is shit as balls, if you're judging it from a musical point of view. Lots of it can be very entertaining, especially if you're drunk or high, but it's often not as good as many of the classics.

For an example, look at the timeless classics. After ten, twenty, thirty years or more, people still love to listen to their music. But nowadays, music from 2011 is old. I find that very telling on the quality of the music.

Btw, I'm not saying you're bad if you like modern music (I actually have very little 'old' music). I'm just saying that it's not as good from a technical point of view.

I'd have to disagree. Modern music builds on old music the way BMW built on the invention of the wheel. I have a great deal of respect for old music because it often broke ground and was very influential for it. However, if you know where to look, artists are taking elements present in old music and mixing them with modern ground-breaking aspects of music and creating something that is -"from a technical point of view" - far greater than anything the past has to offer. I zealously critique my library from a musical point of view, and older music has almost always let me down. Anything you show me from the past I can find something modern that is musically and technically just as awesome and challenging, and it has elements of something else that the older music didn't. That's just how development works; music is progressing, and if you choose to stay in the past your technical and musical judgement fails to develop.

I also feel you're only critiquing the pop music of our generation; the "timeless classics" have yet to make themselves evident, but notably great or influential pieces will emerge and be remembered as the music of this decade. Be patient.

Side: YES

I'll agree with that. I did write 'much' at the beginning of my post, but yes, I should have specified that I was mainly aiming my critique at the sort of music that was mentioned in the original post: modern mainstream poppy shit, to put a general label on it.

For example, I love going through some dubstep, or some dirty garage tracks, and hearing the development of the song, and how the sound progresses throughout it, the massive complexity of it and yet marvel at how it all comes together. Saying 'modern music is shit' is obviously way more blunt than I intended to be, and yes, I was insulting a lot of great music there, but I feel I was also correct in regards to a significant portion of modern music (and media in general).

First, I would say that your brother should be allowed his own tast in music much less other things.

Second, you are allowed your own opinions.

Third you can voice your opinion and your thoughts about your brother's taste as well as your own.

Fourth, I agree more with your brother than you as it relates to your taste in music. That doesn't mean I don't like yours. I just don't like yours as much.

Enjoy debating whateverit is you decide to debate.

Of course he's not stupid. Most of the bands that you named that you brother enjoys are very, very good. Does he listen to Pink Floyd, by any chance?

Also, I wouldn't consider one's musical interests a signification of their intelligence.

Side: NO

and now that i think about it, u guys make great points. i guess i was just looking at it from only a childs point of view. never said that i didnt like any of those bands or that anyone who listens to classical music is stupid, but just the fact that thats ALL he listens to, at least have some knowledge of modern day.

Side: NO

To say that one is stupid because he or she does not like the same as you is kind of disrespectful.

And frankly, I'm 17 and I think 70's music is waaaay better than all these crappy music we have today.

I mean seriously, come on. Pitbull, Flo Rida, Miz Khalifa, LMFAO .. how can you call one stupid for not being interested in hearing that crap?

I would say your brother is a genius, not stupid as crap.

Side: NO

I agree, for the most part. Nearly ALL of today's rap/hip hop and pop music is absolutely garbage, which the primary reason for it is to gain profit, rather than focus on the music.

I enjoy 90's rock (System of a Down and KoRn), for the most part, so I don't believe not liking modern music is stupid.

Also, like I said before, I don't agree that one's musical tastes signify their intelligence in any way, but that's just me.

Side: NO

Yeah, I'm more on the easy road.

I love the Carpenters, Michael Bublé, Westlife, Robbie Williams, The Corrs...

Those aren't old classics, I know :p but they're not like the new songs we hear on the radio today.

Side: NO

Somebody "from the 70s" wouldn't be 90 years old..

Anyways, no. He seems to have a pretty good taste in music. (In my opinion, it's all subjective)

You wanna talk mindless? how about the people who only listen to what's new and on the radio. Stupid as crap. Who cares WHEN a song came out or WHO listens to it. If you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't. I hate when people make up these social rules. Why does a guilty pleasure have to be guilty? Taste is taste.

If you say a song is "overplayed" you're probably talking about the radio.. I guess. Okay, what if I don't listen to the radio? Do you see how that could be frustrating if I say "hey I like this song and somebody says "Oh pssh that songs way overplayed"

Okay I've gotten off on a tangent again. (:

Anyways. That being said, a lot of my fiends who have good taste in music believe the myth that the only good music is older music(particularly pertaining to rock) but the truth is that there is good modern music. You just have to look for it because it's usually(I said usually) not mainstream.

{But I have to say slipknot is stupid.} (;

Side: NO

Having read the other posts, I'll not harp on about taste as a sign of intelligence, some people just don't like music as much and prefer it spoon fed to them.

If you want good modern music, it's there, but prepare to be open minded, music evolves in order to stay fresh, and genres move on a cyclical basis, based on trend and taste, as a Dj and producer I've spent a lot of time finding and listening to music, whether it be by leafing through vinyl in dusty record shops, or scouring the internet for underground and unsigned acts. There's a beauty to be found in all genre, and I exclude none.

Hipsters and knobheads like to harp on about scenes and what's cool or not, but fail to recognize that today's tinkerer in the basement becomes the architect of the future.

Dubstep began as a niche genre being made by a handful of guys, played in a handful of clubs in South London and Bristol, trying to distance themselves from the commercialized 2step garage scene, it was panned by critics and is, when you think about it, a really strange sound, nobody thought it would be as huge as it became.

This is true of all genre, Nirvana and Pearl Jam came out of a similar scene in Seattle, Blondie and Talking heads from CBGBs in New York, The Doors and The Byrds from Whiskey a go go.

The classics of tomorrow are being made now, and there has mostly always been disposable pop music for those that just like a catchy tune, the major difference is now you can buy the music straight from the producers and it's not so well publicized, but in that lies the fun.
