Is war necessary

Basically this is a debate on if War is necessary in this world. This debate is also to help me gain graphs for an assignment i have in my college class. The topic of my final is exactly what this debate title is. I need to know who thinks war is necessary and who doesn't. This isn't about who's right or wrong. This is about simply stating opinons on your OWN thoughts for it. In no way am I taking either side myself simply because War is War in my opinion and weather we want it to happen or not it WILL happen due to what ever circumstances. Two topics I want to be focused on is World War II and the our own American Civil war (Union and Confederates) Please keep it friendly and try not to get to upset over someone's thoughts. Even though only three people have replied thus far thank you for the input, you are all helping me in a small way no matter what. But remember it needs to be about either the Civil War or World War II

War is necessary because it allows us to test all of our new military equipment and is good target practice for our soldiers ;)

It is necessary until all religious zealots have canceled each other out.

After that rational people, finally having become the majority can work things out by healthy debate or at least computer simulated War.

It is in sense a part of the evolution of the species. Similar like the Cromagnon man died out and homo sapiens sapiens was left to roam the world - the homo religiousus will die out and homo techno-symbiosus will be left to roam the universe.

Has war ever been, at any point, necessary? Yes. A good example of this is (YaY for topicality) WWII. If the world had sit back and just watched Hitler murder all the jews, disabled, and gay people he could find, that would have been far more immoral than fighting.

However, I don't believe that war is a necessary evil that we can't eliminate. I have hope that somehow we can connect with each other as humans and rehabilitate the evil so that war will not be necessary any more. I know how naive this is, but I think it is possible, even though it's terribly unlikely.

War is necessary as a counter to war. But wars of aggression are not. If there were no wars of aggression, there would be no wars.

Is it necessary? Not really. Its inevitable though with politicians deciding everything. You can solve conflicts through diplomacy and not war. I'm interested to see though what the US is going to do once Iran finally develops a nuke.

Not really. we could always handle things peacefully like with a contract or a meeting

I am of the opinion that war is never necessary no matter what the reason or seduction might be. In war there are no winners. Everyone and every nation loses when they must resort to it. I am for talking it through, diplomacy. If we are attacked on our own soil, we must protect ourselves but outside of that it's a no-no in my book.

Only, and only if we are attacked on our own soil? Not if our allies are attacked? Not if there are atrocities being committed outside our own borders? Without our involvement in World War II in Europe, it would undoubtedly have fallen to German control, and the genocide the Nazi leadership promoted would have been even more tragic. It should be noted that diplomacy was tried repeatedly and failed due to Nazi expansionism.

Governments must be held accountable for their actions, the United States included. This means that we should not commit war crimes or violate the Geneva convention- and the government and military should be held accountable for their actions. Isolationism is not a viable policy.

If we do not defend ourselves and our allies from injustice, and are not in turn held to standards of justice, we will soon find ourselves alone and in peril. Humanity as a whole has the responsibility to protect the rights of the downtrodden. Oppressors often use violence as a tool; violence is sometimes necessary to counter injustice. Yes, violence should be avoided if possible, but it is not always possible to avoid violent means to a just end. Your rights are as important as mine are, which are as important as a child who has been displaced in Darfur, as are the rights of starving North Koreans, victims of their governments.

"First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me." -Pastor Martin Niemöller

We must defend others and their rights as strongly as we would our own, on or off our soil, by the most peaceful means possible.

What if the people on your soil wont let you have freedom? A revolution can be very bloody. Would it be a nono for you to fight for your freedom, even if it meant bloodshed and sacrifice? If so, your book sucks.

What if they don't want to talk it through?

Where we not winners when we beat the British and declared our independence? Because let me tel you, that was no sit down and talk it through. There was blood, lots of blood.
