"My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all."

I have approximate answers and possible beliefs and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I'm not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don't know anything about, such as whether it means anything to ask why we're here, and what the question might mean. I might think about it a little bit, but if I can't figure it out, then I go on to something else. But I don't have to know an answer.... I don't feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in the mysterious universe without having any purpose, which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn't frighten me.

Most of us here love to Argue and need to put all the knowledge we have gathered, all our opinions across. We are also here to know. That is important. I guess that is enough an explanation.

Side: For a reason

This is an easy question because it has a definite answer. The reason we are here is because we are not there. If we were meant to be there, then we wouldn't be here, we would be there. But we are here so we were meant to be here, not way the hell over there. And so, here we are. Q.E.D ;)

But it is interesting to note, and I would be remiss if I didn't bring it up, that, "No matter where you are, there you are." ;)

Humans are here to explore. It is in our nature to be inquisitive and it is just that which sets us apart from the uncivilsed animal kingdom. It is in our nature to explore our surroundings and this is what we are supposed to do whilst at the same time ensuring that every generation receives a higher standard of living than the last to enjoy the spec of dust that is our existence in this huge universe.

Going off of the idea of string theory, the universe is constantly starting and stopping so to say. It expands and collapses every trillion years so if you believe in the idea of free will being non-existent and every action (which has an equal and opposite reaction) is the cause of past influences, the events in the universe happen over and over in a cyclical manner so inevitably we are destined to enjoy typing about this particular argument again and again and again (albeit with trillion year gaps in between).

I truly see why we would like to believe in such a thing, that life, humans, have meaning and as a result, we ourselves do as well. Simple wishing however does not make a truth, and for this reason, I take a slightly different stand to the question, that a purpose, or lack of, should not be what defines us.

With our current intelligence, I find it unlikely that we would have a predestined significant purpose. It even implies that there is something else out there to appreciate this meaning. And if we knew of this? I doubt that it would change much. We can still be happy without this knowledge. We can still find our own personal meaning in existence, one that doesn't require universal resonance.

Why are we here? If eventually faced with evidence that there is no reason, it surely won't be our end. We'll simply create our own.
