I think most people would say that is for exchanging ideas, but finally debates tend to lack of well constructed arguments and if so, people start attacking themselves with personal insults. Maybe people are not aware of it themselves and think they are exchanging ideas, but they really want to impose an idea and their own beliefs, specially if the debate is about politics or religion. I'm not talking about CD particularly, which is a platform constructed for debate, but is what I can observe in other social media, such as Facebook or Twitter.
