I feel that National Service should be compulsory for all male Singaporeans.
Singapore is a small country, and we are in a rather vulnerable situation. It will be extremely simple for other countries to attack us, seeing that we are just a “little red dot”. National Service helps to train male Singaporeans so that they will be able to protect Singapore if there is a war. Other than helping males to keep fit, National Service also helps to train males to be more disciplined, such as waking up extremely early even after a whole day of training the day before. Assuming that there is no National Service in Singapore, what would happen during war time? Singapore would probably suffer, since nobody will be able to protect our country and ensure our safety.
Not only protecting our country, National Service also teaches males different values, for example: perseverance and teamwork.
National Service is extremely tough, and many are bound to feel like giving up half way, since this generation is also known as the “strawberry generation”. However, in NS, there is no such thing as giving up. You can only keep trying, and keep trying.
Teamwork is also a very essential value in NS. Like what Mr Liu said, “Go far, go together”. If you want to go far, then you have to work together as a team and solve the problems together.
I’m Yee Leng by the way.
