I agree with your point.
When columbus discovered the continent, there were already millions of people living there and when the news spread in europe of a new continent, they all wanted a piece of that land and its resources. They basically killed millions and not only that they brought bacteria and diseases that completely destroyed huge civilizations but also it paved the way for a whole new world.
Was it right to do kill the natives and claim their lands and resources, probably not, was it a good thing though, in the long term probably yes.
