Darwin to Eugenics Debate 2011 Discussion Strand 1

What was going on historically in Europe and America during this time? How could these concepts have possible influences on Darwin's work; or was it Darwin's concepts that had an influence on society's perceptions? Who were some of the science influences to Darwin and who did Darwin influence? Use your research to justify your case.

During the 1800's, slavery existed. When Darwin saw colored slaves, he did not like the fact that they were being tortured but did wonder how and why they were colored. Darwin believed that if someone looked different than he did, then they were not "human". He also believed that since they were colored, they were closely related to apes. During the time of slavery, people were influenced by Darwin's theory which is why they believed that the colored were different from whites so they were treated cruelly.

1 point

i agree with this, Darwin didn't like the way the slaves were treated, but he still saw them as closely related to apes. not human. and people were influenced by what darwin said. which is why they were treated so cruelly.

1 point

Yes i agree that colored people were treated cruelly. Regular humans that were the same thought that the colored people were like animals or aliens because they werent the same as darwin. He was right that the colored people were closer to apes because of the evolution stages.

Yes, i do think this happened as well because people all wanted to look the same and when they saw the colored people, they thought they weren't human

1 point

I AGREE DERWIN WAS INDEED ANTI-SLAVERY HE WAS RAISED UPON THAT WITH HIS FAMILY BUT THAT DIDN'T STOP HIM FROM BEING CURIOUS ABOUT THERE COLOR IT ACTUALLY SHAPED HIS VIEW ON EVOLUTION BUT THEN AGAIN I DISAGREE BECAUSE DERWIN WAS RACIST HE BELIEVED RACISM WAS WRONG AND HE BELIEVED THAT SLAVERY WAS NATURAL AND COMPARED THEM SO APES SO HE CONTRADICTED HIMSELF A LOT

1 point

I highly agree with this. First off, slavery was the big thing going on during the 1800's. Darwin was wondering why they, the slaves, looked so different. So to him he was trying to find the connection between him and the slaves. Maybe after he thought of this, he started looking around and saw how animals were also different from each other.

0 points

i agree because, all this was revolved genes and evolution, coming from apes would be a big part in hereditary traits.

2 points

Darwin thought that all humans are animal. He believed that some were just more evolved then others. in his book it even stated that he wrote "monkeys make men". Its also said that Darwin sometimes referred to god as an animal. He sometimes referred to God as "Creator," but attempted to figure out how God had to create. He was still of mixed opinions, but his mind was drawn magnetically toward materialistic evolution. So he believed even God is something or someone that evolved to what it is today.

1 point

I agree with what this person said because humans according to science were monkeys in the start and they were animals. We are also mammals.

If this entire evolution theory makes sense, then what about the religious stories of Adam and Eve? If Monkeys evolved from humans, how did the story of Adam and Eve come to be? :/

Darwin thought that animals and humans both evolved from a simpler ancestors. In his theory we evolved from apes. He was curious in how god had created everything but he did not think that god had evolved. The industrial revolution was occurring during Darwin's time along with slavery. So this made Darwin more curious to find out why some people do better in this world than others.

2 points

During this time in Europe and America, there was slavery everywhere because of racism of other ethnicities. There was also Industrial Revolution happening. On Darwin's ship, there were colored men, who were treated differently than white men. Darwin thought that it wasn't fair to treat some race a way and another race another way. During that time, Jean Baptiste proposed that life evolved, and this idea led to Darwin thought. Darwin observed that the species on the island, were different than the one on different lands. People who involved Darwin, were James Hutton, Charles Lyell, Jean Baptiste Lamarack, and Thomas Malthus. James Hutton influenced Darwin by the variation, adaptation to the environment, and it caused to split apart. Charles Lyell influenced Darwin, by the book he wrote called, "Principals of Geology". The book stated how the slaves were treated like animals. From that, Darwin stated that change took millions of years, and he was wondering if living things changed over time. On the other hand, Jean Baptiste Lamarack was one of the first scientists to propose that living things change over time. But, Lamarack was wrong because he didn't understand how traits are inherited and he didn't understand that an organism's behavior has no effect on its inheritable characteristics. Thomas Malthus stated that if the human population continued to grow unchecked, there would late be insufficient living space and food. Darwin influenced Hitler because Hitler wanted to overpower the world. Darwin also influenced many famous and infamous people from his theory.

1 point

I agree to what you have said because, indeed the Industrial Revolution happening so therefore need more slaves to do work for the 'white' men and since Darwin traveled much he noticed the attitude and treatment towards the colored and soon questioned if the colored were the "missing link" between ape to human just because their skin color was similar to apes, but he didn't know any better.

1 point

The slave trade was going on during these times. The way that slaves were treated so poorly and treated like animals made Darwin think that they were less evolved than white people which caused him to think that they were still lesser beings. Their appearance also made him think that this was the case as well. Hathen and Lyell discovered that the Earth was millions of years old and Jean Baptiste Lamarch recognized that living things have changed over time which influenced Darwin to come up with his theories.

1 point

yes i agree. so also at this time Darwin was introduced statistical analysis of heredity by his cousin, Galton. Which showed that moral and mental human traits could be inherited.

1 point

During Darwin's travels he witnessed the treatment and the quality of the slaves during the slave trade. He indeed thought that they were lesser beings mainly because of their appearance. What scientists were thinking of at the time was how to increase the quality of the slaves. For instance they would take the male slave who could lift the heaviest objects and they would take the strongest female slave and they would make them mate. The result would drive the scientists to continue in this if the offspring was strong. The treatment of these slaves were completely horrible considering that the scientists were acting more like lesser beings than the slaves were. Also, Charles Darwin's cousin Sir Francis Galton actually came up the general idea of eugenics.

1 point

in both Europe and America, slavery was very common. Charles Darwin was around at that time. he'd seen the slaves and how they were treated. he saw the people of color, and compared them to himself. he figured that if someone didn't look like him, they were lower on the food chain. he said that people of color were more related to apes than they were other human beings. and people must have thought, well since a scientist is saying that these people are animals, then theres nothing wrong with what we're doing. Darwin theory might have had a lot to do with how slavery was dealt with in the 1800s.

1 point

I agree because through seeing how the slaves were treated and why they were treated cruel. For this, he looked more into the of evolution and find out if people of darker skin were less evolved. Darwin then wanted to explore the reason for slaves color but the sad thing is that he didn't know about genetics. For being darker he proposed that people were related to apes and that people with lighter skin were more evolved. Darwin theory may be correct or incorrect.

1 point

I agree, he didn't like the way they treated the slaved people. despite all the bad treatment, they used their blood in their experiments and the slaves weren't aware of that.

1 point

I agree with all that this person is saying but there also was a need for a lot of slaves due to the the industrial revolution and how people were working a lot and made slaves if you were colored. If you were colored you were looked down upon and no one treated you with respect. Darwin tried to figure out how different everyone really was and his theory the strongest survive is based on how people were treated back then and that the whites are the strongest. That is what i believe he was saying and what he meant.

0 points

I agree. When Darwin saw colored slaves, he wondered how and why they were colored. Darwin believed that if someone looked different than he did, then they were not human, but were closely related to apes.

1 point

During this time, the slavery was taking place. These concepts could affect Darwin's work because at this time many were dying from germs and living and working in unhealthy places. These were the people he would consider not naturally selected because they weren't strong enough to survive. Many influenced Darwin, such as Thomas Malthus, Charles Lyell, Georges Cuvier, and Alfred Russell Wallace. Darwin influenced Francis Galton, Margaret Sanger, Adolf Hitler, Theodore Roosevelt, Herbert Spencer, Ernst Haeckel, David Lloyd George, and Gregor Johann Mendel.

During this time the industrial revolution had not been in place during this time. it was still slavery that had been taking place. this is not effective because we kno w that during his voyage he witness slave trade and this is when he realize that if human don't look like him, then they aren't human...

1 point

Historically, what was going on in Europe and America during this time was slavery. This had an influence on Darwin's work because, even though he didn't agree on how they were treated, he still believed that they were less evolved than him. Because he has never seen a person of color, he believed they were more closely related to apes. Society was now influenced by this opinion because they believed that they could treat the slaves like animals because they are more evolved than them.

1 point

The Industrial Revolution was in America and in Europe the population was dropping. This is also the time of slavery so African men and woman are brought to America. these concepts influence Darwin's work because The Africans look more like animals to Darwin then white people. and the Slave masters were treating the slave like animals. Darwin was influenced by James Hutton, he was a geologist and he said that natural Forces change the earth over time. Also a man named Charles Lyell he wrote a book called the principle of geology which Darwin read on his five year voyage. This made Darwin to ask about things change over time, and Change took millions of years. Darwin notice through Tomas Malthus survival of the fittest and Natural selection. Darwin has influenced scientist in the modern day world.

1 point

I agree with you that Thomas Malthus and Charles Lyell influenced Darwin because a lot of Darwin's concepts started because of their ideas.

1 point

In what ways is epigenetics influenced by the environment? If you disagree, why and how is epigenetics not influenced by the environment? Then what is influenced by the environment?

1 point

During this time there was still slavery in the U.S.A. and there was still a lot of racism in Europe. These concepts had influences on Darwin's work because people then thought that the slaves were like animals and then they treated them like animals. Even Darwin didn't think highly of slaves. One of the science influences to Darwin was Charles Lyell's book the Principals of Geology. This promoted Darwin to ask about living things change over time. He was also influenced by Thomas Malthus. Darwin applied his observations of Malthus to animals. Darwin also influenced future other scientists and people like Hitler.

1 point

I agree that Hitler was influenced by Darwin because. Darwin had said survival of the fittest.Hitler took that as killing the non perfect person and creating the perfect human. But Hitlers Idea Of the perfect person is not Idea to others.

1 point

Slavery and the Industrial Revolution was happening during the 1800's and Darwin's time. Darwin thought that colored people were less envolved then he was. He thought that the colored people were more related to apes then a regular human. Then until Lyell influenced Darwin that living things change over time

1 point

I agree with Kevin because Darwin thought of African Americans as animals instead of people (white people.)

1 point

what was going on historically in Europe and America during this time was urbanizations like the industrial revolution and slave trades. epigenetic influenced Derwin's work because during that time there were slaves and he was intrigued on the color of there skin and why they were like that.the people who were influenced by Derwin were Theodore Roosevelt, Herbert Spencer, Ernst Haeckel, and David Lloyd George

1 point

During Darwin's time there was a lot of slavery. Darwin, being exposed to this regularly, made key observations about the people. Darwin thought that because the slaves were darker coloured and were treated differently that they were closer relatives to monkeys. Darwin did not like what the slave owners/traders did to the slaves but in the same way this helped darwin come to the conclusion of his theory.

1 point

I agree with Emily because we wouldn't have this much information about evolution if it weren't for Charles Darwin. Him being exposed to slave with a different color skin than him made him curious, and that curiosity is how he got his theory.

1 point

Slavery was happening during 1800's. Darwin is a witness of slavery, he saw how they people treat the slaves and shift them in various places. From this experience Darwin had an idea that colored people might have a close relationship to apes. Lyell influnced Darwin about the ideas they have.

1 point

During the 1800s, slavery was taking place. It affected him to see how they were treated like apes. It was society that contributed to his perception. Darwin was influenced by Linnaeus, Lyell on their theory on species. Malthus was influenced by Darwin with the growing population and the unavailable resources.

1 point

during the 1800’s (darwins time) slavery was everywhere. Darwin saw how slavery effected everyone. Colored were treated like animals. He became interested in how things change over time like slavery has, using lamarchs recognition to the subject of how things can change over time, although he was incorrect about certain things that change(the giraffes necks), he still had a main idea that hereditary does change through time.

1 point

Because Darin was exposed to slaves, he was able to find out a theory of evolution and genes and how the slaves were darker than him. He found out his theory and people agreed with him, and that is why he is known for Darwinism, which is the theory ofa set of movements and concepts related to ideas of transmutation of species or evolution. His theory has been around since the 1800's and is still well known today.

1 point

Also, during the 1800s, Hitler was influenced by Darwin's theory because they conducted experiments that made them believe that they were closely related to apes. One of Darwin's theories that influenced Hitler was that if someone looked different from someone else, they didn't have the right to survive because they were closely related to apes.

I agree with you and disagree with you. First off, Hitler was not around during the 1800s or the Nazi's. Hitler took power in August 1934 as the Führer; meaning leader and Germany became Nazi Germany. I agree that Hitler saw people that aren't like him different. Hitler followed the concept of 'Survival of the fittest' that was brought up by Darwins theory. This means if you were crippled, colored, Jewish, genetic mutations, and not fit (physical appearance like weak). So if you were 'different' you would be killed or sterilized (not allowed to have sex).

In Europe and America, many poor, Black people were slaves. They treated the Black people very bad and used their bloods in their experiments without their constant. Darwin was influenced by what was happening in Europe and America, so he tried to figure out how did these people got their color and he refused the idea that says the people who are not the same color as we are and don't speak our language, should die.

1 point

in dawins time he saw lots slavery, seeing this he made a observation about humans that since the slaves were treated differently and were darker in color they were more like animals then whiite men where. and i agree with alex

1 point

Dariwn was alive in the 1800s. During this time, the slave change was going on. Darwin was always amazed with colored people. He believed they weren't human and that they are closer to apes. This caused them to be treated unfairly.

1 point

I agree, darwin was seeing all the things happening to the slaves and thought about why they were treated unfairly and if they were more human or more ape.

1 point

When Darwin saw black slaves, he did not like the fact that they were being tortured and treated badly, but did think why they were black. Darwin believed that if someone looked different than the people he was use to seeing, then they weren't human. He also believed that since they were black, they were closely related to monkeys. During the time of slavery, people were influenced by Darwin's theory which is why they believed that black people were different from white people so they were treated bad. It Darwin's concepts that had an influence on society's perceptions. Darwin influenced the world with evolution, also black people influenced Darwin to think up the theory of evolution.

1 point

What was going on historically in Europe and America during this time? How could these concepts have possible influences on Darwin's work; or was it Darwin's concepts that had an influence on society's perceptions? People were legally being used as slaves especially Africans.Charles Darwin affected society by stirring up new ideas and changing how people viewed Gods creation theory. A lot of the 'upper class' people found his theories immoral and scary as it forced them to rethink there view of themselves as divine creations. Society had a huge impact on Charles forcing him to hide his ideas for a long time due to the fear of rejection by society. The main impact Darwin had was on religion was that his ideas showed that the world was a lot older than people were prepared to believe. He showed that over time creatures had slowly evolved and changed including the human species. This was a very new and scary concept at the time. His theory literally opened up a new world.

While Darwinism was happening in the 1900's there was slavery. Darwin saw himself how African American's were treated when he went on a ship. This could have influenced his thought differently about African American people because of the way they were being treated. One science influence was Charles Lyell who promoted Darwin to ask about living things and how they change over time. But Jean Baptiste Lamarck was the first one to see that things change over time. Darwin's theory is that things change over time so there were influences that lead Darwin to think the way he did.

1 point

I agree with Aldiana when she said that seeing the slaves on the ship influenced his thought differently about African American people because of the way they were being treated. This what he experienced at this time.

1 point

yes i agree with you. but he also thought that the slaves were related to the apes. so they thought that they were animals. and it was the 1800s not the 1900s

1 point

i agree with mehwish because the latest evidence suggest that that Darwin's anti-slavery beliefs helped to shape his theory of evolution. Darwin's aunt, Sarah Wedgwood, gave more to the anti-slavery movement than any other woman in Britain. Darwin's mother and wife were Wedgwoods and anti-slavery was what Darwin called a “sacred cause”. He was taught to see the oppressed black as a “brother”. This explains why, when he went to Edinburgh University at 16, he could apprentice himself to a freed Guyanese slave to learn the art of bird preservation without thinking it infra dig. That former slave became an “intimate” friend.

It was the 1800s* I agree with Aldiana, Darwin thought things change over time. & the African American slaves were treated horribly and he was against slavery.

1 point

Slavery existed during this time of Darwin's beliefs. Darwin saw that there were black slaves, that were being beaten in front of his face. Darwin was thinking that if someone looked different then him, then they were not the same species as him, in this case a human. There were several different scientists that made him believe what he did. the first one was Thomas Malthus. He an economist who noted that if human population continued to grow unchecked, sooner or later there would be insufficient living space and food for everyone. Another one was Jean Baptiste Lamarck. He was one of the first scientists to recognize that living things have changed over time. He proposed selective use or disuse of organs, organisms acquired or lost certain traits during their lifetime. These traits could then be passed down to their offspring. Over time this process led to change in a species. Another one was James Hutton. James was a geologist who wrote about how geological forces that have shaped earth. He proposed that layers of rock that make up the ocean floor, mountain ranges and valleys were shaped by a variety of natural forces (examples: rain, heat, cold temperatures). The final scientist is Charles Lyell. Charles wrote a book (Principles of Geology)that Darwin read during his 5 year voyage at sea.Lyell stressed that scientists must explain past events in terms of processes that they can actually observe, since processes that shaped the Earth still influence Earth today. Lyell's influenced Darwin by promoting Darwin to ask about living things changing over time and the time: he had to realize that change took millions of years.

1 point

I agree with Andrew that Darwin was thinking that if someone looked different then him then they were not the same species as him.

The Industrial Revolution (1820-1870) was important to the economic development of the United States. The first Industrial Revolution happened in Great Britain and Europe during the late eighteenth century. The Industrial Revolution then came on the United States and Germany. The first industrial rev was important for inventions of spinning and weaving machines operated by water power eventually replaced by steam. America went to war with Great Britain in 1812. (http://americanhistory.about.com/od/industrialrev/a/indrevoverview.htm). Darwin influenced many people like Francis Galton- who formulated the modern field and term for Eugenics-the study and practice of selective breeding applied to humans. On the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, Darwin's influence on the the modern world, analyzed by Ernst Mayr, one of the 20th century's best evolutionary theorists. This was a very an interesting time period in the world, because it was the age if Imperialism. All of the major countries in the world had small colonies in Africa, South America, or Asia. Great Britain was the largest power in the world, and at that time period the saying "The sun never sets on the British Empire" was created. That's because Great Britain held many colonies all over the world. Darwin wondered why countries like Great Britain had so much power and wealth, and why so many others were made up of people living in squalor.

1 point

At this time, there were slaves in America & Europe. Darwin thought that these colored slaves were not human beings and thought low of them. Darwin saw how these slaves were being treated and was against slavery. He thought they looked different and were more like apes.

Jean Baptiste Lamarck, Charles Lyell, James Hutton and Thomas Malthus all influenced Darwin's theories. Lamarck thought that organisms changed over time and there were traits that needed to be passed down from generation to generation in order for that change. Lamarck was wrong. Charles Lyell thought that scientists had to explain the events in the past because it is what shaped the earth and is still influenced today.James Hutton thought geological forces shaped the earth. Thomas Malthus said that if the population was to grow there would not be enough space to live and no food to eat.

1 point

I agree with Noel. There was slavery in America and Europe. Darwin saw that the slaves were treated like animals, but he didn't believe that they should be treated the way they were treated. It's also true that Darwin was against slavery. People believed that they looked like apes, but they didn't look like apes. Those people influenced Darwin in many ways. Lamarack did state that things changed over time in order for it to be the best fit in the environment. But, Lamarack's theory was all wrong. Lyell stated that earth changed over time. Malthus was also another influence. The people influenced his theory and his ideas. There was also Industrial Revolution during this time.

Slaves were being traded during this time. the slaves were usually slaves because of their skin colors. they were treated very harshly during this time. they were not treated equally. their bodies were used for dissections and experiments. people thought that slaves were less evolved than they were. Darwin thought they were related to a animals because of their skin tone and color. he wanted to know why the slave's skin color was different than theirs. where the animals or normal humans like us who were colored? he didnt like them being tortured. people thought the colored were not like the whites. they must have not been like them. the truth was that they all were humans. not animals.

Darwin was influenced by the colored people.Charles Darwin was influenced by many writers, scholars, philosophers, and friends. One of his influences was Thomas Robert Malthus, a late-eighteenth century economist.Darwin was also influenced by many writers, scholars, philosophers, and friends.

Slavery was going on at this time! Darwin saw slave kids getting beat up and it changed his mind on a whole lot. He didnt support slavery but yet again he did. He thought very poorly of colored people and made them seem less than what they really were. He wondered how people of color were here, did they evolve from apes? Then he came up with his theory of Evolution ; he was inspired by James Hutton & Charles Lyell. The influences Darwin had were : He promoted to ask about livingthings and changing over time and also he had realized that change took millions of years, he thought of that because of these scientist.

Darwin's anti-slavery beliefs helped to shape his theory of evolution. Darwin more mad by slavery than in South America. During the Beagle voyage he saw the aftermath of slave revolts. Darwin's mother and wife were Wedgwoods and anti-slavery was what Darwin called a “sacred cause”. He was taught to see the oppressed black as a “brother”. What was happening in Europe and the United States during this time period was slavery. This did influence him because he didn't believe in slavery and neither did his family. His first encounter with FitzRoy’s ‘civilized natives’ told him that these differences could quickly be overcomed. Encounters with native people across South America, Polynesia and Australia confirmed to Darwin that humans were one species. Some of the people the influenced Darwin were, James Hurton, Charles Lyell, and Jean Baptist Lemarck.

1 point

In the 19th Century, in the Americas and Europe, Slavery was occurring. Slavery definitely had influence over Darwin's Work and concepts. He had thought that the African Americans were more closely related to the Primates then those with lighter colored skin. This thought has occurred when he was sailing around the world, because he came in contact with many African American slaves. From this thought, society liked this theory because this allowed the settlers in America and people in Europe to continue using slaves.

1 point

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist. He published his theory in his book "On the Origin of Species". America and Europe was experiencing slavery during this time in history. This concept influenced greatly on Darwin's theory because it was the world he lived in. He observed how blacks were treated horribly and different and figured that they were not like us. He has vividly seen how the way they were treated was bad enough to break the lowest animals spirits. He discovered that descendants have a common ancestry. He discovered this after observing fossils

1 point

During this time in history there were slaves all over the world. There were slaves in America being sold all throughout Europe. Charles Darwin grew up during this time a slavery and observed that the slaves were receiving very inhuman treatment. Appealed by this treatment, he realized that the slave owners saw the slaves as not as good as themselves and where nothing more than servants. Through his observations Darwin concluded that since the slaves were treated so poorly that they were less evolved than he was and were yet to evolve to his level. From this he believed that that humans were originally formed from apes and eventually evolved into humans. Growing up Darwin was highly influenced by Charles Lyell, a British geologist who wrote studied and wrote about Geology. Charles lyell also influenced many other men other than Charles Darwin.

1 point

I agree with you. There were many inhuman actions towards slaves during this time. Just to add on, there were several other people who influenced Darwin, but Charles Lyell was extremely important in creating Darwin's concept/work becuase he proved that organisms had to adapt to their new environments.

1 point

Darwin looked at slaves as different people because of their skin color and behaviors. In fact, Everyone was hypnotized to think of them as outsiders and inhuman because the way they act. So Darwin thought that black people were of different species and developed differently. Today, colored people are actually regular people. The reason why slaves back then were acting like they were back then was the way that they were treated as, property and not as humans. Slaves were angry and that behavior then made Darwin to look at them scientifically on their origins, where they came from.

1 point

In Europe and America, the Industrial Revolution was taking place. This is where the invention of new things started to happen, making Europe discover new ways of life and thinking. Darwin's concepts had an influence on the people living in his time because they were learning so many new different things at once. After the acceptance of his concepts by scientists, his ideas became more accepted worldwide.

Beyza Ozer, I got you! This really explains the Industrial Revolution events that influenced Darwin's concepts. This was well done. However, I think you need to talk about how more Europe influenced/was influenced by Darwin's concepts and why these ideas and events were important during this time!

Social Darwinists argued that individuals and groups, just like plants and animals, competed with one another for success in life. They used this assertion to claim that individuals or groups of individuals at the top of social, economic, or political hierarchies belonged there, as they had competed against others and had proven themselves best adapted. Darwinism was used a lot during the Civil War (1860s). The U.S. was experiencing a lot of social and political issues because of Britain. In addition to the issue of slavery, which made whites more dominant that caused slaves to be fueled by constant immigration.

1 point

In Europe and America, slavery was going on. He saw how the slaves were being treated and how nobody liked them. He compared himself to the slaves. If the slaves didn't look like him, they weren't classified as humans. He said that colored people were related to apes more than to humans. Slavery influenced Darwin even more. He used this to help prove his theory of evolution and natural selection.

Go into more detail about slavery and how it effected Darwinism concepts. Talk about different concepts besides evolution and natural selection. And write the definitions of these concepts to really explain why or how these concepts relate to the events in the time period.

1 point

During the time of Darwin's concepts there was the Industrial Revolution happening in America. In Europe during this time, the population decreased rapidly and also the Agricultural Revolution took place in Europe also. This was during the late 1800's. The decrease of the population in Europe was an influence for scientists to find a way to increase the population back. This became the concept of eugenics. Eugenetics is to increase the population. In America, the Industrial Revolution was influenced by Darwinism concepts because its like concept of evolution which is a change. The industrial was a time where there were improvement in mining, transportaion, etc. which is why it became and influence for Darwinism concepts because it's changes.

1 point

I completely agree. The fact that the population is decreasing and the scientist need a way to increase the population. I also agree with the fact that she said the industrial was influenced by Darwinism. Another thing that I agree with is the industrial time was change just like Darwinism's concepts are about changing.

1 point

In the 1800’s, there were some Supreme Court, in Dred Scott decision, rules that a slave is not a citizen. Financial crisis in Europe and U.S. There were a lot of slaves.

Darwin’s own abhorrence of slavery affected his thinking on the origins and unity of the human species. Darwin had provided a new resource for addressing the theologians’ problem of suffering. While there was a real sense in which Darwin’s theory put the attention to pain, struggle, cruelty and waste in the works of nature. Darwin thought that the slaves were not humans like him, he thought that they were animals. In his concept of natural selection and how the fittest survive, he thought how nature selects the traits and the fittest survive which means he used the slaves as an example because he thought that their nature selected their traits.

Charles influenced natural science. He gave the people the idea of struggle for existence and the survival of the fittest. He showed that in his “Origin of Species”. Natural selection has molded the genotype for millions of generations.. In evolutionary biology, theories are largely based on concepts such as competition, female choice, selection, succession and dominance. These biological concepts, and the theories based on them, cannot be reduced to the laws and theories of the physical sciences. Darwin himself never stated this idea plainly. My assertion of Darwin's importance to modern thought is the result of an analysis of Darwinian theory over the past century. During this period, a pronounced change in the methodology of biology took place. This transformation was not caused exclusively by Darwin, but it was greatly strengthened by developments in evolutionary biology. Observation, comparison and classification, as well as the testing of competing became the methods of evolutionary biology, outweighing experimentation.

Some people influenced Darwin’s concepts, like Charles Lamarck who also had the idea of organisms changing, but his idea was that of acquired traits that are passed on from generation to generation. For example, he explained the long necks of giraffes to have come about because they continually stretched their necks to get at the tree leaves. "Unlike Darwin, Lamarck held that evolution was a constant process of striving toward greater complexity and perfection. Even though this belief eventually gave way to Darwin's theory of natural selection acting on random variation, Lamarck is credited with helping put evolution on the map and with acknowledging that the environment plays a role in shaping the species that live in it." Uniformitarianism- Darwin studies Lydell's work and takes some ideas for his theories. Darwin's theory of Social Darwinism has influenced political, public health and social movements in Japan since the late 19th and early 20th century.

I think Darwin's concepts influenced society. The rise of industrial revolution came and new ideas started such as lassize-faire economics, which is the idea that the government shouldn't interfere with the economy it should be survival of the fittest which was thought from Darwin's research. Later on a scientist called Dalton came up with eugenics. Eugenics is a concept that people with the best traits could mate and those without would be exterminated or sterilized(surgicaly altered not to mate). Those people would be crippled, mentally ill, genetic disorders, poor and others. America took full grasp of it and made involuntary sterilization programs across the state and segregated immigration.

1 point

I agree with you. Darwin made a big contribution to our society and it is how we act now at this day. Dalton later came and added more into the the theory of eugenics.

I agree with this person, because of Darwin's concepts, the slaves and people started new ideas during that time

In Europe and America, slavery was issue going on. During Darwin’s travel, he saw a lot of abuse towards slavery. For example, he saw slaves getting beat up: “I have seen a boy, six or seven years old, struck thrice with a horse-whip (before I could interfere) on his naked head.” After seeing the abuse to slaves, Darwin was outraged of such actions. Because Darwin saw this abuse, he thought that they were animals and not human. Which then goes into is theory of natural selection and survival of the fittest. Darwin wondered why and how they were colored, while they shared other similar traits and characteristics to other people. He thought that nature decided and selected the slave’s traits. He used this example to describe natural selection.

A person that influenced Darwin was James Hutton. James Hutton helped further explain that animals or organisms had to adapt to different environments. Another person was Charles Lyell. He promoted Darwin to ask about living things changing over time. Jean Baptiste Lamarck was one of the first scientists that recognized that living things have changed over time. He believed that organisms have a tendency toward perfection. As a result, organisms can alter their size and shape by using their bodies in a new way. This theory supported Darwin’s theory that organisms change over time. Thomas Malthus, an economist, had a theory that if the human population continued to grow unchecked, there would be an insufficient living space and food for everyone. Darwin applied his theory into his own work. He noted that an organism’s environment is not over run with too many offspring because of survival of the fittest and natural selection.

I agree that there was racism in that time and Darwin saw that they are different which caused him to have the idea of natural selection. He also influenced some people. Herbert Spencer (18201903) was thinking about ideas of evolution and progress before Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species (1859). Nonetheless, his ideas received a major boost from Darwin's theories and the general application of ideas such as "adaptation" and "survival of the fittest" to social thought is known as "Social Darwinism". It would be possible to argue that human evolution showed the benefits of cooperation and community. Spencer, and Social Darwinists after him took another view. He believed that society was evolving toward increasing freedom for individuals; and so held that government intervention, ought to be minimal in social and political life.

When Darwin arrived in Tierra del Fuego and anchored in the Bay of Good Success, he described the place as a "savage land" and referred to the Fuegians as "savages". He said, "I could not have believed how wide was the difference between savage and civilized man; it is greater than a wild and domesticated animal..." As early as the 1800s, Darwin's statement about the Fuegians as savage people reflected the belief of that time that darker colored people were less civilized and inferior to white people. With the rise of social Darwinism and its belief of "survival of the fittest", it made the issue of racism worse by allowing many societies to believe that only the white society is the true society. Darwin may have been against slavery but in his study of evolution he said that there existed "primitive races" which evolved between the "civilized" races of man and gorilla.

Darwin was influenced by many scientists. One for instance, was Thomas Robert Malthus. Malthus wrote The Principle Of Population, which theorized that "population growth would always overpower food supply growth, creating perpetual states of hunger, disease, and struggle. The natural, ever-present struggle for survival caught the attention of Darwin, and he extended Malthus' principle to the evolutionary scheme. " During this time majority of people were poor and strive to survive. Because of this, Darwin began to get the idea of survival of the fittest, where those who are struggling will die out leaving the ones with the good traits to survive.

Another scientist was Lamark. Lamark believed that in order to do something they gain a trait. For example, if a giraffe needed to reach the tall branch then generation after generation would stretch their neck until they reach the branch. Darwin took this into consideration ,but instead of "the giraffe has a long neck to enable it to eat, but it can eat because of its long neck."

I agree with you. Charles Darwin was influenced by many scientist. But you forgot to include one of the most influential people to him, Charles Lyell.

The new field of Epigenetics is showing how your environment and your choices can influence your genetic code, and that of your kids. Darwin's concept revolves around how certain traits are passed down, generation to generation, and how natural selection happens in nature. It is just the survival of the fittest in that matter. It also has to do with adaptation to different climates, and different regions.

1 point

During the time of Industrial Revolution, which was happening in America, Darwin's concepts started develop too. As for Europe the population decreased rapidly, also the Agricultural Revolution took place in Europe too. This all happened in the late 1800's. The population of Europe decreased, and became an influence for scientists to find a some way to increase the population back to normal or just to increase it more.

1 point

During Darwin's time the industrial revolution was taking place. The industrial revolution could have affected people and how much they choose to beleive of theories. The industrial revolution was a time of great change and many thigs were happening which could have made people beleive Darwins theories more easily. Darwins theories also effected the people, for example the church did not like his work very much. Later after his time the Nazis would use his theories of survival of the fittest as an excuse to kill millions of innocent people. Thomas Malthus, George Cuvier, Charles Lamarck, and Alfred Russle Wallace all had influences on Darwin and his work. They all had some similar theories or ideas about populations, anatomy, organisms changing, and even evolution by natural selection.

1 point

During this time in America and in England, black people were being used as slaves for white people. This affected Darwin's work because he saw this as evolution. Since Africans had darker skin, Darwin thought that black people were not as far, evolutionary, as white people. This was just an opinion off of his observation that he made into a theory called: survival of the fittest. This theory also gave more power to white people because they thought that they had more of a right to own and use slaves because they weren't as "good" as them.

1 point

I agree with Randy because Darwin's theory made the white people seem very superior in the fact that they thought they could "control" the slaves. Obviously, they didn't give a care that they were hurting their own species, even if they were a little evolved because of the skin color difference. Survival of the fittest made the white people see themselves as more fit and they were killing the Africans because they had no say in anything, not even to defend themselves from torture.

1 point

During his time the Industrial Revolution was happening and workers had to work in cruel environments. Also there were colored slaves. Darwin wanted to know how and why they were colored. He had an idea that humans evolved from a simpler ancestors. In this case, apes. Darwin proposed the idea that some people had traits that gave them a better chance then others, natural selection. Basically he proposed the idea of survival of the fittest.

1 point

Slavery was going on at this time and the American's were testing slaves for cures from diseases. The African American's were believed to have had tougher skin than the white people so they tested on them instead. Also, the American's decided to not give them anesthesia or numbness to help with the pain of surgeries. Since, at this time, there were no antibiotics, many did not survive.

Darwin created the point of survival of the fittest. This relates to slavery because whenever a slave was able to fight infection from the surgeries, made them more fit than the other slaves. Natural selection decides what traits you are going to have at random, and some of the slaves received those genes to be able to survive.

1 point

During this time in history, slavery was going on. People thought that slaves had tougher skin and a tougher immunity so they ran various tests on them in order to find cures for diseases. Not only were these tests harsh, but the people who were giving the tests, did not give the slaves anesthetics. Many did not survive from these tests. This goes along with Darwin's survival of the fittest. Only the fittest of the slaves survived the tests. His theory gave more power to the white people because they thought they could own and abuse slaves.

1 point

I agree with you. Slaves were treated really harshly. And because of Darwinism and survival of the fittest, they were treated even worse. Darwin's theory gave the white people more of a chance to pick on blacks. Darwin's theory was survival of the fittest. The whites believed that whites were the best and the blacks weren't "human".So they decided to treat them badly because they weren't as good as whites.

1 point

During this time in Europe and America there was slavery and Darwin believed all humans are animals. He believed that some were more complex and evolved and others less. There was a lot of racism and the industrial revolution was also occurring during this time. These concepts influenced Darwin's works. He couldn't understanding why whites and blacks were treated differently. He tested and studied a lot to prove that they are the same. Darwin's concept only the strongest survive was accepted by many and it is what he studied a lot. Darwin used heredity or the passing down of traits to figure out how things evolved and how the off spring be made and the traits that it would receive. People that influenced Darwin were James Hutton and Thomas Malthus for example. There were many others.

1 point

Europeans heard about Darwin's theory which is about only the strong species survive. This theory is called Social Darwinism, which is going to be a buzz in Europe. Europe at this time was conquering land from around the world. Europe was now focused on Africa because of its natural resources it had. With Europeans conquering parts of Asia, they were curious for more land. Now at this time Europe having a lot of pride and pride for conquering land. Some Europeans started to believe Social Darwinism because it had made sense. They were strong and superior, while the Africans were the weak which not live long. With the momentum they had, Social Darwinism just added to their confidence boost to conquer Africa.

1 point

During Darwin's time slavery was in existence. Also the Industrial Revolution was going on.They could have influenced his work by seeing how blacks were treated differently than white people and that could cause his Natural Selection to come into play. He believed that they were not at the top of the Natural Selection chain since they were different than everybody else, but he was against the slavery. Some people who influenced Charles Darwin were, James Hutton, Charles Lyell, and Jean Lamarack. Darwin influenced people all over the world, but he made black people upset by saying they are very closely related to apes.

1 point

The lassize-faire economics came up with the saying of "Survival of the fittest" meaning drive out the weak and keep the strong through competition. Also, Nietzsche was influenced by Darwinism because the strongest should only survive and there should be no compassion for the weak. There should be war because the weak would be driven out.

What was occurring in Europe at this time was the Holocaust. Nazi governmental policy was openly influenced by Darwinism, the Zeitgeist of both science and educated society of the time. Hitler believed humans were animals to whom the genetics laws, learned from livestock breeding. Darwinism not only offered the Germans a meaningful interpretation of their recent military past, but also a justification for future aggression.

In the United States, slavery was happening at the time and Black people. In Darwin’s book called “Sacred Cause” by Adrian Desmond and James Moore, say that slavery propaganda of the time often claimed that different races belonged to different species, a notion that Darwin’s work obliterated. Arguments about the races were at the forefront of intellectual and political debate.

1 point

During this time in history the slave trade was occurring and when Darwin would travel he would see the slaves. He would believe that they were lesser beings because of the quality of which they were being treated in. Also because they resembled a lesser race because of their color. This inspired Darwin to make his theories.

1 point

At that time there was a lot of debate about evolution because of lack of evidence, Darwin's theory was unsupportable, and the theory was also against the teaching of Genesis, because the churches believed animals could not evolve, and there was also slavery at that time, so when the slaves heard about social darwinism, that they all came from the same trait, they felt unfairness

1 point

During Darwin's time, there was slavery and slave trading this, had a big effect on Darwin. He didn't support slavery, but he saw the slaves as animals. More specifically, he saw them as apes because of their skin coloring. The lighter-skinned people then began to accept his theory and saw it as a chance to justify the way that the slaves were treated.

1. Epigenetics can be compared to Darwin's concepts. For example, we know epigenetics is the study of how the environment affects the expressed trait. Darwin learned that geographic barriers can cause animals not being able to breed (reproductive isolation). Epigenetics affects the phenotype and reproduction is a reason for epigenetics. The environmental barriers affecting an offspring to have a different phenotype. Now they are also different besides being very similar. Epigenetics is the study of how the environment affects a phenotype. However, Darwinian concepts contrast because descent with modification suggests that animals move and adapt to their surroundings. If animals adapt then how does epigenetics go along with descent with modification?

1 point

I agree because epigenetics can be compared to Darwin's concepts because he involved them in his research and stated facts about evolution.

1 point

I agree with this because i also beleive that the industrial revolution impacted how Darwin's theories were viewed and accepted.

1 point

Good job, Melanie Leftakes. I agree with your argument. Also, slavery was very popular in America. A lot of change occurred as result of the Revolution and new concepts were created all the time, Darwin's being one of them. They became widely accepted and scientists greatly influenced others beliefs in Darwin's theory.

Epigenetics is the study of how the environment affects the expressed trait and that is what Darwin believed . For example, Darwin noticed that the same species in the world were different because of their environment they lived in. These species needed to survive by adapting to their environment.Darwin learned that geographic barriers can cause animals not being able to breed. Epigenetics affects the phenotype. The environmental barriers affecting an offspring to have a different phenotype. Darwin's concepts contributed to eugenics because a British explorer and natural scientist, France Galton influenced by Charles Darwin's theory of natural selective.

During this time, there were a lot of laws being passed, and a a lot of anti race. One anti racial group that was form was the nazi. During this time there was a lot of countries being form including the US. during the war, Hitler believed that the human gene pool could be improved by using selective breeding similar to how farmers breed superior cattle strains. He believed that if a particular group doesn't look like him then they are not human and can't survive the fitness.

You are a little off in your years here by a century but, you are partially correct because Hitler did use Darwin's idea using artifical selection to choose who lived and died.

I agree, Darwin's time was actually way before the Nazis and the World War.

Charles Darwin, an English naturalist lived from 1809 to 1882. It was a time of slavery and mistreatment of colored people and people of “minority”. Seeing colored people didn’t bother him as much, but what did bother him was the fact that not everyone looked at his concepts the way he did. He believed that there was natural selection being made, and only the strong can survive. He didn’t look at the colored people as the “strong” and believed they wouldn’t survive as long as other people would. He didn’t care about how the people were treated or thought of a way to stop the treatment, all he cared about was how the evolution worked out in his researches and used their skin color for research to see if they were less evolved. Even though he didn’t agree with the treatment, but didn’t stop it, he was still considering the people of color less evolved than him and said that it was normal for people who are less evolved to be treated bad and differently because only the “strong” survives. These concepts were influencing Darwin because he could have been a better researcher and not have been wrong the whole time, if he didn’t believe that everything that comes out his own mouth is right, and no one else’s. The people who influenced Darwin were Alexander von Humboldt, John Herschel and

Charles Lyell. The people who Darwin had influenced were Joseph Dalton Hooker,

Thomas Henry Huxley, George Romanes and Ernst Haeckel.
